Imaging-based internal body temperature measurements: The journal Temperature toolbox

Abstract: Noninvasive imaging methods of internal body temperature are in high demand in both clinical medicine and physiological research. Thermography and thermometry can be used to assess tissue temperature during thermal therapies: ablative and hyperthermia treatments to ensure adequate temperature rise in target tissues but also to avoid collateral damage by heating healthy tissues. In research use, measurement of internal body temperature enables us the production of thermal maps on muscles, internal organs, and o… Show more

“…Multifunctional MR imaging, for example, can provide detailed anatomical information before and after cryoablation, but also accurate temperature monitoring and thus on-the-fly thermal regulation 160 . NIR thermography can also measure temperature difference from a shift and narrowing in NIR spectral peaks due to temperature-dependent changes in intermolecular hydrogen bonding in water 161 . It is still limited by low penetration of NIR waves, and background noises from tissue in front of the cryoprobes can introduce errors in measurement, making it difficult to accurately visualize ice ball growth in inner organs.…”

“…Infrared thermal imaging (IRTI) temperature measurement technology was developed on the basis of the development of an infrared focal plane array. An IRTI temperature measurement system is a 2D thermal imaging temperature measurement device [14]. The system detects and displays the distribution of infrared radiation energy density based on between the target and the environment according to the gray value of the gray image.…”

“…Non-invasive imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), photoacoustic imaging, microwave radiometry, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), etc. are used for internal temperature measurement (Raiko et al 2020). Compared to other imaging techniques, MRI is found to be suitable for non-invasive thermometry due to the spatial resolution and anatomical coverage per unit time of MRI, its lack of ionizing radiation, and the ability to provide contrasts images as well as temperature maps (Winter et al 2016, Rieke 2012).…”
