With the recent advances of mobile computing devices with communication capabilities, virtual environment walkthrough and real-time streaming movie playback for mobile devices has opened a new class of 3D virtual environment explorationbased applications such as virtual guides and malls, online gaming, training and monitoring, just to name a few. The challenge lies in how to provide a rich and detailed 3D virtual environment on thin mobile devices that are known for their lack of proper resources to process large scale 3D geometric data. In this paper, we focus on defining a new approach to remote rendering and interactive visualization of 3D virtual environments on thin mobile devices such as PDAs and cell phones. To this end, we propose efficient end-to-end streaming and rate control protocols to support the requirements of bandwidth-demanding multimedia systems. The main purpose of our proposed rate control scheme is to achieve both high end-to-end throughput and low frame rate fluctuation in order to adapt data traffic to the frequent changes of the bandwidth and error rate, mainly due to the nature of wireless networks. We discuss the design of our proposed streaming and rate control algorithms, and report on the their performance evaluation using an extensive set of simulation experiments.

With the recent advances of wireless networking and mobile devices technologies, exploration of remote 3D virtual environments has received a great deal of attention nowadays where many applications can be envisioned, such as virtual guides malls, online gaming, just to name a few. The primary objective of this paper is to present the specification of a buffering mechanism and a scheduling solution for ontime image delivery for a class of applications that is based upon a remote virtual environment exploration. Similar to a video buffering, our approach involves buffering the images closest to the user's position within the virtual environment, thereby, providing the client device with the necessary imagery data for rendering future user's viewpoints, removing network jitter, and providing smooth virtual interaction. In this paper, in order to overcome the limitations of current mobile device graphics performance, we propose to use a remote rendering approach that streams the necessary images to a client device as the user explores the virtual environment, leaving only the display and a number of minor image-based rendering tasks to the local, less powerful mobile hardware. Using ns-2, we present and extensive set of simulation experiments to evaluate the performance of our scheme. Our results indicate clearly that our solution is able to guarantee on-time delivery for approximately 40 sessions with a 10 Mbps link.

Abstract AbstractRemote Image-based rendering (IBR) is the most suitable solution for rendering complex 3D scenes on mobile devices, where the server renders the 3D scene and streams the rendered images to the client. However, sending a large number of images is inefficient due to the possible limitations of wireless connections. In this paper, we propose a prefetching scheme at the server side that predicts client movements and hence prefetches the corresponding images. In addition, an event-driven simulator was designed and implemented to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme. The simulator was used to compare between prediction-based prefetching and prefetching images based on spatial locality. Several experiments were conducted to study the performance with different movement patterns as well as with different virtual environments (VEs). The results have shown that the hit ratio of the prediction-based scheme is greater than the localization scheme in the case of random and circular walk movement patterns by approximately 35% and 17%, respectively. In addition, for a VE with high level of details, the proposed scheme outperforms the localization scheme by approximately 13%. However, for a VE with low level of details the localization based scheme outperforms the proposed scheme by only 5%.
