Image analysis method of surface roughness evaluation

Abstract: Purpose -The main aim of this paper is description of new apparatus and approach for contact less evaluation of surface roughness. For characterization of surface roughness, the procedures based on classical and non-classical (complexity) parameters are proposed. Design/methodology/approach -For obtaining the roughness profile in the selected direction (on the line transect of the surface), the special arrangements of textile bend around sharp edge is used. The image analysis is used for extraction of surface … Show more

“…Ten roughness measurements were made on each replica (weft faced ones) with a cylindrical stylus and arm system, and the roughness values of a sample was calculated by using total 50 measurements. For the characterization of fabric surface roughness, the mean absolute deviation (MAD) (Equation (1)) was used (Militky & Mazal, 2007). This parameter is equal to the mean absolute difference of surface heights from average value (R a ).…”

“…Geometrical roughness only provides the upper and lower limits of variation in thickness of a fabric (Vassiliadis & Provatidis, 2004). The geometrical roughness characteristics of the fabrics provide information on their structural characteristics (Militky & Mazal, 2007). In general, there are two kinds of irregularities -a systematic variation arising from uniform fabric structures such as cord or ribs, and random variations caused by uneven threads or thread spacing (Ajayi, 1994).…”

“…Some of them are closely connected with characteristics computed from fractal models as fractal dimension and topothesy (Davies, 1999). A set of parameters for profile and surface characterization are collected in (Militký  Bajzík, 2003, Militký  Mazal, 2007. Parameters for profile and surface characterization can be generally divided into the following groups:…”
