Illustration of the Genetic Differences in Ozone Sensitivity Between the Varieties Nicotiana tabacum Bel W3 and Bel B Using Various Plant Systems

Abstract: The ozone‐sensitive tobacco variety Bel W3 was compared with the tolerant cv. Bel B using amphidiploid and amphihaploid genotypes of both. In search of the first genotypical differences, their reaction to acute ozone treatments was investigated with systems of decreasing degree of complexity: whole plants, grown under field, greenhouse and sterile conditions, excised tissues, calli, CCP, MCP and subcellular reactions. It was common to all systems that a fumigation, which clearly exceeds the threshold of the mo… Show more

“…3) ptesent in control plants incteased after ozone treatment by regulated upon ozone exposure, and do not follow the overall reduction in plasmalemma protein eontent, suggests that they are closely linked to ozone response and assoeiated with defence mechanisms. Such a conclusion is supported by the close relationship between ozone sensitivity and membrane traits demonstrated by Stadtler & Ziegler (1993).…”

“…Sttess-induced plasma tnembratie changes may strongly perturb different cellular functions, but they can also play an important role in adaptation to stress and stress defence. In the case of ozone-induced sttess, Stadtler & Ziegler (1993) detnonstrated that variational resistance of tobacco plants to this pollutant otiginates mainly frotn membrane traits. Existing studies on the effect of ozone on plasma membrane proteins tnainly concetn functioning of the proteins involved in ttansport processes.…”

“…During development of this test, all experiments were done at least twice, but all results, unless stated otherwise, presented here were drawn from a single experiment. The results, obtained with the fully established test summarizing a statistical number of single experiments are presented separately (Stadtler and Ziegler, 1993). A.…”

“…A field experiment was carried out in the urban area of Parma. A comparative analysis of the physiological results was made, comparing results obtained on BelW3 with those of BelB, i.e., tobacco plants known for their resistance to this pollutant [28]. The research also aimed to investigate the persistence of the protective effect (if any), by carrying out measurements three weeks after the end of treatments.…”
