“…In a previous study on the incidence of AD in elderly Korean subjects living in Yonchon, a rural agricultural area, the incidence rate of AD was estimated to be much higher than that found in the current study (12.6 cases per 1,000 person-years in the rural subsample vs. 7.9 cases per 1,000 person-years in the total sample), with 15.8 (95% CI 12.9-17.3) cases per 1,000 person-years at the 3.5-year follow-up [5] and 21.0 (95% CI 16.5-26.4) cases per 1,000 person-years at the 5.5-year follow-up [6]. This difference in the estimated incidence may be attributed to the difference in the educational level of the participants between the 2 studies.…”

“…The incidence of MCI has never before been investigated in Asian countries, including Korea. Although one study has previously been published on the incidence of AD in Korea [5,6], the estimate may not represent the incidence of AD in the elderly Korean population and requires verification as the study was conducted in a rural population and the estimated incidence of AD was much higher than that of other Asian and Western countries [7,8,9]. Many potential risk factors for AD reported in previous prevalence studies [2,10,11,12] have never been verified by prospective incidence studies in Korea.…”

“…3,4 Illiteracy is the extreme end of low education, which was not uncommon in aged population of our country due to the specific historical situation. 5 It was reported to increase the To understand the clinical characteristics of dementia depending on the educational level, we performed a cross-sectional study comparing the two contrasting groups, illiterate patients vs. highly educated (more than 9 years of formal education) individuals, within the same clinical stage of mild AD dementia.…”

“…Uma nova forma de acesso à informação se torna disponível, o que amplia consideravelmente as possibilidades de desenvolvimento do indivíduo, seja no âmbito social, emocional, cognitivo ou cerebral. Sabe-se hoje que não saber ler e escrever é um fator de risco para o desenvolvimento de demências (Brucki, 2010) e que a doença de Alzheimer progride mais rapidamente entre as pessoas que não leem do que entre as pessoas que leem (Lee et al, 2008). …”
