Iliopsoas Bursitis and Tendinitis

Abstract: This review examines the diagnosis and management of iliopsoas bursitis and/or tendinitis. It is a relatively uncommon and unrecognised cause of anterior hip pain and anterior snapping hip. In view of its pathology, iliopsoas bursitis might be better referred to as iliopsoas syndrome. It can usually be diagnosed by history and physical examination, though real time ultrasound may be useful in confirming the diagnosis. Magnetic resonance and computerised tomography imaging have limited roles in its diagnosis, b… Show more

“…Inflammation of the bursa which is between the tendon and the pelvis or anterior hip capsule can contribute to this situation. Because of the close proximity between tendon and bursa, the inflammation of one will inevitably result in inflammation of the other [44,45]. Although symptomatic medial iliopsoas snapping is rare, it may also associated with iliopsoas bursitis and tendinitis [45].…”

Although symptomatic medial iliopsoas snapping is rare, it may also associated with iliopsoas bursitis and tendinitis [45]. As a cause of pain after total hip arthroplasty, impingement of the iliopsoas tendon reportedly occurs in up to 4.3% of patients [46].…”

“…Risk factors include female gender, rheumatoid arthritis, overweight, low back syndrome, fibromyalgia, and hyperuricemia [18][19][20]. The GTPS is triggered by chronic microtrauma, overload, muscle dysfunction, or acute trauma [21][22][23]. Clinically, the pain can be elicited over the greater trochanter with palpation.…”

“…Furthermore, neither cadaver muscles nor biopsy specimens allow muscle fibre morphology and force development to be studied during contraction in the living human being [6]. In vivo muscle and cadaver muscle architectural characteristics differ in both contracted and relaxed conditions [7].…”
