IL-10 and TNF-α polymorphisms in subjects with irritable bowel syndrome in Mexico

Abstract: Background: there has been recent evidence of an alteration in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) immune regulation, as well as variations in cytokine polymorphisms.Aims: to determine the frequency of the IL-10 (-1082G/A) and TNF-α (-308G/A) polymorphisms in subjects with IBS in Mexico. Methods: volunteers answered the Rome II Questionnaire and were classified as IBS (n = 45) and controls (n = 92). The IBS subjects were then categorized as IBS-D: 22.2 %, IBS-C: 28.9 %, and IBS-A/M: 48.9 %. The polymorphism frequenc… Show more

“…As for the other studies that addressed IBS, their findings are inconsistent since some of the studies that assessed IL-10 genotypes in IBS patients versus controls showed highproducer genotype for IL-10 had a lower frequency statistically significant in IBS than in controls (P = 0.003) [79], and other studies did not find statistically significant difference of IL-10 polymorphism in IBS patients [78]. Schmulson et al [78] assessed two polymorphisms: IL-10 (-1082G/A) and α tumor necrosis factor (-308G/A) in IBS patients and compared them with controls.…”

“…Regarding genes and polymorphism, there are several studies that have assessed gene polymorphism, of which IL-10 and α tumor necrosis factor are some of the ones that are being intensively investigated [77][78][79].…”

“…IBS patients were previously found to have a lower frequency of the high producer IL-10 genotype compared with controls in Turkish patients (Gonsalkorale et al, 2003), and other studies have revealed that the presence of low serum levels of IL-10 is an independent predictive factor of IBS (Schmulson et al, 2013). In addition, women with IBS-D presented with lower IL-10 levels compared to those with IBS-C and IBS-M (Schmulson et al, 2012).…”

“…In the present issue of Revista Española de Enfermedades Digestivas Schmulson et al (8) discuss the first association study on the polymorphisms of immune mediators -interleukine (IL) 10 and tumor necrosis factor a (TNF-a)-to be performed in Mexico. Prior studies suggested cytokine signaling disbalance as an etiologic factor for the development of IBS (9,10).…”
