Abstract: ÖzetEski devirlerden beri medeniyetlere başkentlik etmiş olan İstanbul, Fatih'in kenti fethiyle birlikte yeni bir hüviyet kazanmıştır. Fatih fetihten kısa süre sonra hemen kenti imar faaliyetlerine girişmiştir. Fatih'le başlatılan ve Kanunî ile doruk noktasına ulaştırılan imar ve iskân faaliyetleri sonunda, İstanbul Müslümanlar çoğunluk olmak üzere Hristiyan, Yahudi, Ermeni, Çingene gibi dinsel farklılığa göre biçimlendirilmiş bir yapıya dönüşmüştür.
