IgM-antibody response to the hepatitis B core antigen in acute and chronic hepatitis B

Abstract: SUMMARYA solid phase M-antibody capture radioimmunoassay (MACRIA) and a serum fractionation method were used to quantitate the IgM response to the hepatitis B core antigen (IgM anti-HBc) in acute and chronic hepatitis B infections.Antibody to the core antigen was predominantly of the IgM class during the acute phase of hepatitis B. Resolving acute infections remained positive by MACRIA, but at decreasing levels, for as long as 6 months. IgM anti-HBc persisted in HBsAg carriers but at levels very much lower tha… Show more

“…Hepatitis B surface antigen, hepatitis B core antibody IgM and hepatitis B core antibody IgG were measured using an enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit (Dia-Sorin, Italy) by standard methods [11][12][13]. Anti-HCV was detected by a 3rd generation ELISA kit (Biochem Immunosystem, Canada) [14], while HCV-RNA extraction was carried out by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction [15].…”

“…Hepatitis surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B core antibody IgM (HBcAb IgM) and hepatitis B core antibody IgG (HBcAb IgG) were measured by ELISA technique using kits from Dia-Sorin Biomedica Co., according to the methods of Boniolo et al [10] , Tedder and Wilson [11] and Hoofangle et al [12] respectively. Anti-HCV was detected by third generation of ELISA using kit from the Biochem ImmunoSystem Inc [13] , HCV-RNA extraction was carried out by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) according to the method described by Ravaggi et al [14] .…”
