IGFBP-3, a sensitive marker of physical training and overtraining

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the response of the somatotrope axis (insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), insulinlike growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3)) to intense exercise in relation to tiredness. Methods: The study involved 11 rugby players who completed a questionnaire intended to evaluate fitness or, conversely, overtraining and who agreed to plasma samples being taken before and after an international rugby match. Results: The main finding of our study is that we observed strong negative correlations… Show more

“…These Wndings corroborate the studies of Alemany et al (2008), Ormsbee et al (2006) and Isley et al (1984) indicating that in comparison with athletes eating a diet restricted in energy and protein, the hormones testosterone, IGF1 and IGFBP3 are maintained at normal physiological concentrations when energy intake is adequate. In this study runners from both groups showed similar energy intake, and as suggested by Elloumi et al (2005) this condition could help explain why IGFBP3 levels were maintained.…”

“…In addition, these observations suggest that the symptoms of overreaching, the term used for the initial phase of overtraining syndrome when athletes notice a decrease in the ability to train and physical performance, could be controlled by monitoring the catabolic status using the testosterone/cortisol and IGF1/IGFBP3 ratios (BanW and Dolci 2006;Elloumi et al, 2005). When comparing the ratios of baseline values in both experimental groups, no signiWcant diVerences were found.…”
