IgE antibodies in relation to prevalence and multimorbidity of eczema, asthma, and rhinitis from birth to adolescence

Abstract: Specific IgE is strongly associated with eczema and allergic multimorbidity throughout childhood and with asthma and rhinitis from age 4 years. However, 23% of the children with IgE sensitization do not develop any disease in childhood.

“…Atopy, atopic asthma and allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis are common in Puerto Rican and Swedish children (11, 28). Moreover, allergic rhinitis is a frequent co-morbidity of atopic asthma (14, 29) and thus yet-to-be identified preventive measures against atopy and allergic rhinitis is likely to further impact the prevention of childhood asthma.…”

“…Subject recruitment and baseline characteristics of participants in the BAMSE Swedish birth cohort study have been previously described (10, 11). In brief, between 1994 and 1996, 4,089 newborn infants were recruited and questionnaire data were obtained.…”

“…Despite the recent focus on the clustering of aeroallergens that have similar sensitization effects in children [1,5], the association of allergic disease severity with polysensitization remains relatively understudied [16,34,38]. Polysensitization is significantly associated with a poor quality of life in patients with allergic rhinitis [17] and intermittent asthma [19], and with higher asthmatic symptom scores for dyspnea, wheezing, and cough [13].…”

“…There is a strong association between IgE sensitization and allergic diseases [1,5], but the attributable risk is only 30-50% [2,6,7]. The presence, severity, and number of factors associated with IgE sensitization are important indicators for diagnosing [8,9,10] and predicting the progression of allergic diseases [11].…”

“…Similarly, the 14-year follow-up analysis of an Australian community-based birth cohort showed that the proportion of asthma associated with atopy was 52% overall (9). The results of a recent cohort study, which followed a large group of newborns over various periods, indicated that the prevalence of asthma from 4 to 16 years is markedly higher among ever-allergic sensitized children compared to never-sensitized ones (10). At a population level, a recently published longitudinal study that prospectively collected data over the first four decades of life showed that the occurrence of asthma before the age of 13 years was more strongly associated with atopy and greater airflow obstruction than later onset asthma (11).…”
