PurposeThis article aims to outline how the Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (INIST‐CNRS), the French leader in the document delivery market, works with a broad national and international network of some 200 libraries and STI centres. It also seeks to provide an overview of recent developments in the French academic ILL network and of French copyright legislation, as well as information on negotiations with publishers on secure electronic delivery.Design/methodology/approachThe article is based on a communication at the 10th Interlending and Document Supply conference, Singapore, 29‐31 October 2007. It is descriptive and based on INIST data and experience.FindingsResource sharing and networking in document delivery on a national and international level have become essential to maintain good quality services.Originality/valueThe article focuses on INIST‐CNRS, a leader in the document delivery market.

AbstractObjective -The term "best practice" appears often in library and information science literature, yet, despite the frequency with which the term is used, there is little discussion about what is meant by the term and how one can reliably identify a best practice.Methods -This paper reviews 113 articles that identify and discuss best practices, in order to determine how "best practices" are distinguished from other practices, and whether these Evidence Based Library and Information Practice 2013, 8.4 111 determinations are made on the basis of consistent and reliable evidence. The review also takes into account definitions of the term to discover if a common definition is used amongst authors.

Josep-Manuel Rodríguez-Gairín ResumenSe presenta la evolución en los últimos veinte años (1992-2012) de la automatización del préstamo interbibliotecario en las bibliotecas universitarias españolas. A partir de los distintos procesos que se llevan a cabo en este servicio -envío de peticiones, localización y recepción de documentos y gestión interna-, se identifica cada uno de los programas utilizados y se pone de manifiesto como han evolucionado cada uno de los procedimientos en paralelo a la propia tecnología. Taking into account the routines and procedures carried out by ILDS services -document identification, localization, document request, reception of borrowed items and user services or internal management-the article lists the software used in Spanish universities to handle these services, setting it into the context of the evolution of each process in parallel with software developments.
