If Safety Is Not Enough. A Multidisciplinary Research on Seismic Prevention of Museum Collections: The Museographical Analysis

Abstract: The paper presents part of a work-in-progress research on earthquake damage mitigation for museum collections, focusing on the museographical aspects. The essay is part of the research project RESIMUS -Resilience Museums, developed by a group of researchers of DIDA of the University of Florence. We present two fundamental museographical tools: the drawing as an instrument of study, and the study of coherent museographical references. The paper tries to merge the literature on proper devices for the seismic rel… Show more

“…When analyzing resilience in museums, scholars have mainly focused on actions to ensure cultural heritage preservation, such as earthquake prevention (Cerri & Collotti, 2019) or disaster risk management (DRM), “including preparedness and risk mitigation, emergency response and post-disaster resilient recovery” (Minguez Garcia, 2020, p. 38). Current approaches have highlighted the role of international knowledge-exchange initiatives and of collaboration models for the adoption of preventive conservation procedures.…”

“…Other well-known examples are not part of the study because of the inconsistency with the research's criteria. It is the case of the new setting of the Michelangelo's Pietà Rondanini at the Castello Sforzesco, Milan, Italy(Cerri and Collotti 2019) and of the Bronzi di Riace at the MarRC -National Archeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, Reggio Calabria, Italy: they both concern only the arrangement of big objects. Although geographically distant, the chosen case studies share the same intervention modality involving several professionals and proposing resilient solutions.…”
