This journal article presents an in-depth investigation into the intricate phenomenon of code-switching in Nigerian online comic skits, a burgeoning genre of digital entertainment. Within Nigeria, a nation characterized by linguistic and cultural diversity, online comic skits have emerged as a potent medium for creative expression, social commentary, and cultural representation. This research delves into the analysis of the different roles and types of code-switching employed by content creators in these skits, elucidating their linguistic, sociocultural, and comedic dimensions. Conducting a descriptive qualitative analysis, Poplack's (1980) Model of Types of Code-Switching and a functional model adapted from Hoffmann (1991) and Appel and Muysken (2005) were applied. Five skits, selected based on substantial viewership and the popularity of content creators, formed the core of this study. Our findings indicate that all three types of code-switching are prevalent in the skits, with inter-sentential switching being the most frequent. Additionally, the seven functions of code-switching manifest in the skits, with the referential function emerging as the most frequent. The primary use of code-switching in these skits revolves around fostering humor, expressing strong emotions, and portraying the educational status of the characters.

Osob Walikan, commonly referred to as Walikan Malang, can be widely used in the social life of Malang people. Developed from a code language, this language still exists even though it already served its purpose and developed into a Malang local language. This paper investigates the current perception of Malangese toward Walikan and its relationship with the maintenance of the Walikan language, which is a local code street language that has shifted to become an urban language. This qualitative study uses questionnaires and interviews to gather the data. The findings showed that there are 3 main perceptions of Malangese towards Walikan: a language as an identity, cultural heritage, and symbol of solidarity. The majority of participants agreed that Walikan is important and needs to be preserved because Walikan has its values for the Malang people. The main method of preservation is to use this language actively in communication so that there are always active speakers to prevent the decline of language use.

An Analysis of Code-Switching in the Movie “Luca”

Code-switching is a socio-linguistic phenomenon that often happens in our daily life. This study is conducted to analyse code-switching that happen in the movie “Luca”, which is the most streamed movie in 2021. There are two research questions of this study, which are what are the types of code-switching used in the movie? And what are the functions of the code-switching used in the movie? The qualitative method is used in this study. To collect the data, the researcher will search for the movie and the movie’s script on the internet. After collecting the data, the researcher will watch the movie while reading the script. Then, search the meaning of each code-switching, and group the types and functions. The study found that there are three types of code-switching used in the movie which are inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and tag-switching. The most frequent code-switching types used are inter-sentential and tag-switching, which are 39,72% and 20,56%. There are 4 types of code-switching used in the movie, which are referential, directive, expressive, and phatic functions. The most frequent code-switching function used is directive, which is 38,35%.
