IEC 61850 Configuration Solution to Distributed Intelligence in Distribution Grid Automation

Abstract: To solve the configuration issue when using International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61850 for distributed intelligence in Distribution Automation Systems (DAS), this paper proposes the configuration solution in terms of semantic models and processing methods. Firstly, the special requirements of the DAS configuration are analyzed, consisting of the system boundary of a configuration project, the topology configuration for distributed applications, and the automatic identification of the Intelligent Ele… Show more

“…This paper presents a novel methodology for visualizing process related SCADA data to enhance and facilitate human-centric activities in substations such as regular equipment maintenance. The proposed solution utilizes AR visualization techniques together with standards-based communication protocols used in substations and other power systems automation domains [13]. The developed proof-of-concept AR application enables displaying SCADA data on the corresponding substation equipment with the help of AR markers demonstrates originality and benefits of the proposed visualization method.…”

“…Modern DNs require flexible and reliable operations based on closed-loop design and open-loop operation [20]. Accordingly, an active DN as shown in Figure 1 is selected, in which, the primary system adopts a ring network structure with S1, S2, S3 and S4 at the outlet switches by both sides of the substation.…”

“…The communication network supports optical fiber Ethernet structures according to IEC 61850, while the IEDs at the substations and the RMUs communicate with each other through the core switchers. The generic object oriented substation event (GOOSE), a fast message communication mechanism, is adopted for communications between IEDs [20].…”

“…The application of GOOSE service has been verified in publications such as [20][21][22][23], in which this kind of IEC 61850 message is used to make a logic discrimination, transfer application and modify settings between protection relays, IEDs [24][25][26]. GOOSE service has been proposed as an important tool in order to carry out new enhanced automation in electrical network.…”

“…Furthermore, reference [24] analyzed the usage of IEC 61850 for managing Distribution Automation Systems (DAS) and proposed GOOSE messages as an appropriate technology to transmit time-critical information from one source to multiple receivers. The article also analyzed on the configuration requirements and proposed a configuration solution for a DAS case study.…”
