“…These studies have tried to investigate the attitudes of the lay public towards mental illness (Cumming & Cumming, 1957;Nunnally, 1961), investigate the relationship between psychiatric hospital ideology and attitudes towards people with mental illness (Gilbert & Levinson, 1956), explore public attitude toward and knowledge of mental illness (Chou et al 1996;Shek, 1990; The Hong Kong Council of Social Service, 1997), identify the effect of education on attitudes towards mental illness (Yamamoto & Dizney, 1967;Wright & Klein, 1966), examine the public attitudes with structured instruments such as the 'Opinions on Mental Illness (OMI) Scale' (Cohen & Strt~ening, 1962), and generally understand issues relating to mental illness (Rahav, 1983;Keane, 1990). Study findings are inconsistent, particularly the relationship between attitudes towards mental illness and the social characteristics of the respondents.…”
