Within the identity literature, self and identity are often used as interchangeable terms. By contrast, in Self-Determination Theory (SDT; Ryan & Deci, 2003) both terms have a differentiated meaning and it is maintained that identities may vary in the extent to which they are congruent with the basic growth tendencies of the self that are fueled by the basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Specifically, the level of congruence between identities and the self is said to depend on (a) the motives underlying one's identity commitments (i.e., pressure versus volition) and (b) the content of the goals defining one's identity (i.e., extrinsic versus intrinsic). It is argued in SDT that both the motives and the goals behind one's identity are important for optimal functioning because of their linkage with basic need satisfaction. This chapter (a) compares the SDT view on identity development with prevailing models of identity formation, and with constructivist models of identity in particular, and (b) reviews research relevant to the idea that identities need to be congruent with the self in order to foster well-being and adjustment.

Multiple roles and sense of identity among women in early and later adulthood

The article presents the results of a study conducted on a sample of 80 women aged 19-25 and 72 women aged 40-74. The relationships of the two components of self-complexity (the quantity of self-aspects and the amount of overlap between their contents) with the multidimensionally defined sense of identity were examined. Additionally, phase of life differences in the magnitude of these relationships were also investigated. I used the Self-Complexity Questionnaire (SCQ; Barczak, Besta, & Bazińska, 2007) and the Multidimensional Questionnaire of Identity (MQI; Pilarska, 2012). The obtained results showed that the predictive importance of the number of roles for the sense of identity was marginal, whereas the similarity in the content of roles seemed to favor maintaining the sense of identity. In addition, although significant differences were observed in the self--concept structure and the strength of the sense of identity between the two groups of women, the relationships between these areas of personality were not affected by the phase of the life cycle.Keywords: role overlap; sense of identity; multiple roles; self-complexity.The formation and maintenance of the sense of identity are issues that become particularly important in the context of the current reality, marked by relativism, multidimensionality, and discontinuity. This is because the model of "a changing man in the changing world" (Harwas-Napierała, 2007, p. 21) means a return to thinking about the self in terms of numerous situationally activated self-images. With the self recognized as the basis (material, substance) for identity building, it seems appropriate to look for an answer to the question of what significance the differentiation and variability of the self have to the sense of identity.

Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu Instytut Psychologii WIELOŚĆ RÓL A POCZUCIE TOŻSAMOŚCI U KOBIET WE WCZESNYM I PÓŹNIEJSZYM OKRESIE DOROSŁOŚCI Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań przeprowadzonych w grupie 80 kobiet w wieku 19-25 lat oraz 72 kobiet w wieku 40-74 lata. Analizie poddano związki składowych złożoności Ja (liczby aspektów Ja i stopnia ich treściowego powiązania) z ujętym wielowymiarowo poczuciem tożsamości. Dodatkowo poszukiwano odpowiedzi na pytanie o rolę fazy życia w tych związkach. Zastosowano Kwestionariusz Złożoności Ja oraz Wielowymiarowy Kwestionariusz Tożsamości. Uzyskane wyniki wskazały, że znaczenie liczby ról dla poczucia tożsamości jest marginalne, natomiast treściowe powiązanie ról istotnie sprzyja podtrzymywaniu poczucia tożsamości. Ponadto, choć zaobserwowano różnice w strukturze pojęcia Ja oraz w zakresie siły poczucia tożsamości między badanymi grupami kobiet, to -jak się okazało -faza życia nie modyfikowała istotnie związków między tymi obszarami osobowości.Słowa kluczowe: nakładanie się ról; poczucie tożsamości; wielość ról; złożoność Ja.Zagadnienia formowania i podtrzymywania poczucia tożsamości nabierają szczególnego znaczenia w kontekście aktualnej rzeczywistości -znaczonej relatywizmem, wielowymiarowością i dyskontynuacją. Model "zmieniającego się człowieka w zmieniającym się świecie" (Harwas-Napierała, 2007, s. 21) oznacza bowiem powrót do myślenia o Ja w kategoriach licznych, aktywizowanych sytuacyjnie autowizerunków. Uznając Ja za bazę (materiał, substancję) dla budowania tożsamości, celowe wydaje się poszukiwanie odpowiedzi na pytanie o znaczenie zróżnicowania i zmienności Ja dla poczucia tożsamości. Złożone JaZastępowanie postrzegania Ja jako monolitycznej całości ujmowaniem go jako rozproszonego i kontekstualnego wydaje się najbardziej dramatyczną zmianą w poglądach psychologów na temat pojęcia Ja. Jej wyrazem jest przeniesienie zainteresowania z treściowej zawartości na cechy strukturalne Ja (tj. sposób zorganizowania treści). Pośród różnych modeli struktury Ja (np. Donahue, Robins, Roberts i John, 1993; Showers, 1992; Woolfolk, Novalany, Gara, Allen i Polino, 1995), społeczno-poznawczy model złożoności Ja Linville (1985Linville ( , 1987 wydaje się najczęściej badanym i cytowanym (Rafaeli i Hiller, 2010). Złożoność Ja odzwierciedla tu liczbę i treściowe powiązanie (nakładanie się) znaczących aspektów Ja, teoretycznie zatem ujmowana jest dwuwymiarowo -obejmuje zróżnico-wanie 1 i integrację w obrębie Ja (Constantino, Wilson, Horowitz i Pinel, 2006). Do pomiaru złożoności Ja Linville opracowała procedurę, w której osoby przyporządkowują określony zbiór cech do swobodnie generowanych aspektów swojej osoby i życia. Za wskaźnik złożoności Ja autorka przyjęła statystykę H -miarę rozproszenia danych jakościowych. Wysoka wartość H jest wynikiem sortowania z wieloma aspektami Ja i niskiej redundancji użytych w ich opisie cech.Zgodnie z podstawową hipotezą Linville złożoność Ja moderuje negatywne skutki stresujących zdarzeń, buforując wahania samooceny.
