The fact of speaking a language instead of another at a specific moment in a person’s life depends on many and diverse factors such as immigration, the language acquired and spoken at home, and what the dominant and official language is. In addition, in situations where it is possible to choose, speaking one language instead of another is not a neutral choice, in that the values associated with languages have a lot to do with that choice. In the Valencian Community, in Spain, two languages officially coexist: Castilian, the official language within the whole Spanish State, and Catalan, the historical language of the territory, which is undergoing a process of revitalization since the beginnings of the 1980s. At that time,Catalan was perceived as a second-rate language, associated with peasantry, with the rural context and uncultured people from the lower social classes. The technique employed to reveal these values or stereotypes, namely the matched-guise technique (Ros 1984),was used again during the 90s (Blas Arroyo 1995, Gómez Molina1998) for evaluating the effects of the revitalization program. The results of this work showed that Catalan was gaining more and more prestige, i.e., it was increasingly associated with modern people, city life, learning and social progress. An underlying, though never proved, assumption was that the remarkable improvement in the image of Catalan would be reflected in its use, which would also be more frequent and more widespread. At the beginning ofthe new millennium the matched-guise technique was applied again,with one new twist: to assess the real extent of prestige associated with speaking Catalan (Casesnoves and Sankoff 2003). Ten years later that study was replicated in order to observe the evolution of linguistic attitudes as well as the progress of the linguistic revitalization process. In this presentation, we compare the two data sets to evaluate the effects of linguistic attitudes on the use of Catalan.Has Catalan gained prestige throughout the years? If so, does it have an influence on language use or, on the contrary, are there any other factors such as identity that play a more important role in influencing the choice of speaking Catalan?

This study is a case study that covers the presentation formats for language choice on the speech community of Acehnese based upon family domains in bilingual Indonesian speech behavior. The sources of variance are between Aceh and Indonesian languages in Medan. The parameters that are being used first through language choice between Indonesian, Indonesian/Acehnese, and Acehnese relating to the role relationship between husband to wife; father, mother and their sons and daughters. The second one is related to speech situation such as arguing, advising, chatting, and persuading. The method approach is quantitative descriptive and was employed by the samples of 200 persons. The result shows that the average persentage of the language choice in every single speech situation among the husbands to the wives was 86% and the wives to the husbands was 82% dominantly Acehnese. The average percentage of the language choice among sons and daughters to their parents or vice versa was 76 % constantly mixing language; Acehnese/Indonesian in all of speech situations. The result of this study showed that mostly the husbands and the wives maintain their tribe language well. The result found that most of the children of Acehnese never totally leave their tribe language, even they live in Medan as a big city.

Les noves variables varien entre 0 i 1, de major identificació amb els espanyols o catalans segons el cas a major identificació amb els valencians.…”

Resum: L'article analitza la relació entre el posicionament ideològic dels estudiants universitaris valencians i el seu comportament lingüístic. A més de l'eix tradicional esquerra-dreta, l'autodefinició ideològica requerida inclou també la identificació nacional-regional i la postura sobre la unitat de la llengua catalana, objectes de disputa ideològica sempre latent, ara i adés explí-cita, al País Valencià. Els usos lingüístics són també plurals i diversos; de fet, un punt d'interés remarcable és la correlació entre els més lligats a l'hàbit o als contextos de proximitat i els més intencionals o de relació secundària. És en aquests darrers on les idees poden tindre un paper més determinant.Paraules clau: usos lingüístics, ideologia, identitat, estudiants universitaris, València. Abstract:The paper analyses the relationship between the ideology of university students from the region of Valencia and their linguistic behaviour. Apart from the traditional right-left wing political scale, the required self-defining ideology includes national-regional identity and opinion on the unity of the Catalan (i.e. whether Valencian is considered part of Catalan or a different language). These are issues of ideological dispute more or less explicitly present in the Valencian society. Language uses are also plural and diverse.
