An Improved Supplier Driven Packaging Design and Development Method for Supply Chain Efficiency

Packaging and the role it plays in supply chain efficiency are overlooked in most design and development research. An opportunity exists to meet the needs of supply chains to increase efficiency. This research presents three propositions on how to reduce the gap between supply chain needs and satisfaction in interaction with the product and packaging system. It also proposes a supply chain focused packaging design and development method to better satisfy supply chain needs placed on packaging. An extensive literature review was conducted, and a Tetra Pak derived case study was developed. The propositions were formulated and became the basis for improving Tetra Pak's existing packaging design and development method by better integrating supply chain needs. This was accomplished by using an expanded operational life cycle perspective that includes the entire supply chain. The resulting supply chain focused packaging design, and development method enables improved supply chain efficiency while considering the product, the processes and cost. Society is increasingly demanding automobiles centered on environmental factors and fuel efficiency. Accordingly many studies have examined the use of Al, Mg and composites for lightweight automobiles. We implemented a microcellular plastic (MCP) designed for a lightweight automobile using axiomatic design. The results show that the physical properties of MCPs are most affected by the size and uniformity of the MCPs, and that a weight reduction of about 15% is possible by applying MCPs to bumper covers. In conclusion, the MCP bumper design was proved to be a decoupled design, demonstrating the applicability of MCPs to bumpers.

To survive in the competitive market environment, rapid and accurate quotations of product prices are needed in addition to satisfying consumers from various perspectives, including product quality and after-sale service. This paper develops a framework for a computer-aided quotation system using Axiomatic Design. The system has five functional modules, i.e. inquiry check, search and statistics, design for quotation, price determination, and tender generation. The result of Axiomatic Design for price determination shows that a very complicated software program becomes simple and consists of 14 modules corresponding to 14 calculations and one main module that contains all the junctional properties at each level. According to the framework developed, several computer-aided quotation systems have been developed and applied successfully. A computer-aided quotation system for modular machine tools and production lines consisting of them is introduced as an example.
