Background: In addition to being painful, burns cause aesthetic anxiety, causing patients to apply to the emergencies as soon as it occurs, and their first interventions are made in the emergency. In this study, the compliance with the guidelines in the consultations requested from the burn center and the referral of the patients to the center was evaluated.Methods: Burn etiology, TBSA, burn depth, and area of adult patients were recorded, applied to our hospital's emergency with burns in 2019 and 2020, and were asked for consultation from the burn center.Results: Within two years, consultation was requested from the burn center for a total of 288 patients. Of the consulted patients, 73 (25.3%) were admitted to the center. When the evaluation was made between the patients who were hospitalized and not, the burn depth, etiology, and the percentage of TBSA were statistically significant. Conclusions:Indications for referral and hospitalization to burn centers have been determined with specific clinical guidelines. A significant result that stands out in this study is that 215 out of 288 consultations requested from the burn center didn't have an indication for hospitalization. With this study, the necessity of reconsidering the tendency to ask for a consultation has emerged. Emergency medicine physicians should be well-equipped with minor burn dressings as well as having knowledge about first response, referral decision and management. In this regard, if there is a burn unit/center in university hospitals or education hospitals, rotation of emergency medicine residents to burn treatment units should be discussed.

Queimaduras são lesões provocadas pela exposição direta do tecido cutâneo a agentes térmicos, químicos ou elétricos. A Estratégia de Saúde da Família caracteriza-se como porta de entrada dos serviços de saúde. Objetivou-se neste estudo conhecer a assistência à saúde para pessoas com queimaduras atendidas em Estratégias de Saúde da Família. Trata-se de um estudo exploratório, descritivo-analítico, transversal ao processo de trabalho de 64 profissionais de Estratégias de Saúde da Família de um município da fronteira oeste do Rio Grande do Sul. As entrevistas foram gravadas, digitalizadas e organizadas em um banco de dados no formato de texto. Posteriormente, foram processadas no software IRAMUTEC e analisadas pela classificação hierárquica descendente, pela análise de similitude e pela nuvem de palavras. Os resultados encontrados indicaram significativamente uma resposta negativa quando relacionados ao conhecimento da assistência prestada a pessoas com queimaduras, tornando-se necessário capacitações e treinamentos para as equipes de saúde. Health care for people with burns treated in family health strategies Abstract: Burns are injuries caused by direct exposure of the skin tissue to thermal, chemical or electrical agents. The Family Health Strategy is characterized as a gateway to health services. The objective of this study was to know the health care for people with burns assisted in Family Health Strategies. This is an exploratory, descriptive-analytical study, transversal to the work process of 64 professionals of Family Health Strategies in a city on the western border of Rio Grande do Sul. The interviews were recorded, digitized and organized in a database of data in text format. Introduction: Burns is one of the foremost causes of worldwide morbidity. Changes in appearance and functional impairment causes stigmatisation, impacting socio-occupational engagement and causing discomfort. Aims and Objectives: The study examined prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in post-burn patients, their perceived social support and self-esteem. It further assessed quality of life amongst post-burn patients. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in a tertiary care centre where 100 patients were interviewed using purposive sampling technique over six months. Patients were administered a semi-structured questionnaire along with Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and WHO Quality Of Life – BREF (WHOQOL- BREF) scales. Contingency tables and Spearman's correlation helped to examine associations and correlations. Fischer's exact test, Mann Whitney test and ANOVA test were also used for statistical analysis. Results and Discussion: There is high prevalence of psychiatric morbidity among patients with burns. The most common disorder was major depressive episode. Low self-esteem was found in one-third of patients with burns. Patients having low self-esteem had eleven times higher prevalence of suicidality. Patients with burns had high perceived social support. Quality of life in patients with burns depends on self-esteem, perceived social support and presence of psychiatric illnesses. Conclusion: This study illustrates the need for thorough evaluation and screening in patients with burns for psychopathology and self-esteem issues by primary physicians. Behaviour therapy, supportive psychotherapy, counselling and adequate socio-occupational rehabilitation of the patient should be done. Spreading awareness and organising support groups for patients with burns at the primary health centre level can be effective.
