Identifying minimal hepatic encephalopathy in cirrhotic patients by measuring spontaneous brain activity

Abstract: It has been demonstrated that minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is associated with aberrant regional intrinsic brain activity in cirrhotic patients. However, few studies have investigated whether altered intrinsic brain activity can be used as a biomarker of MHE among cirrhotic patients. In this study, 36 cirrhotic patients (with MHE, n = 16; without MHE [NHE], n = 20) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Spontaneous brain activity was measured by examining the amplitude of … Show more

“…Severity-dependent changes in FC were observed in the left precentral gyrus confirming previous studies showing significantly decreased amplitude of low frequency fluctuation in the precentral gyrus among patients with CHE 45 . Therefore, the precentral gyrus may be important and discriminative brain regions responsible for CHE development 51 .…”

“…Chen et al demonstrated that the amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) values within six regions of interest (ROIs) correlated with PHES in cirrhosis patients. The ROIs contains the posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus, bilateral medial frontal cortex/anterior cingulate cortex, right lingual gyrus, the left precentral and postcentral gyrus, inferior/superior parietal and middle frontal gyrus lobule (Chen et al 2016 ). Zhong et al also found that patients with MHE had significant decreased ALFF (Zhong et al 2016 ).…”

“…Spontaneous brain activity can also be measured by examining the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) in the MRI 101 . It can be used as a biomarker for the detection of HE 101 . Upcoming research focuses on ALFF in combination with blood oxygenation level-dependent functional MRI, creating new opportunities for the diagnosis of HE 102 .…”
