Identifying, Examining, and Planning Areas Protected from Light Pollution. The Case Study of Planning the First National Dark Sky Park in Greece

Abstract: Light pollution is a type of pollution that climaxes in cities and occurs increasingly away from them, due to the increase of artificial lighting and inappropriate lighting design (selection of luminaires, aiming, illuminance/luminance levels, and spectral characteristics). Increasingly, light pollution also affects the countryside due to local lighting but also distant lighting propagating from urban areas. This has a significant impact on ecosystems and astronomical observing sites. This work analyzes the ma… Show more

“…However, according to other studies related to the achievement of just low carbon transition, the supportive and well targeted policies, standards and realistic and flexible initiatives are necessary (Arabatzis & Myronidis, 2011 ; Grigoropoulos et al, 2020 ; Kolovos et al, 2011 ; Ntanos et al, 2016 ; Yuksel, 2008 ). It is also noteworthy that in low carbon transition debates it has been stressed out the importance of redesigning of urban landscapes and protected areas, as well as the selection of energy performance indicators and environmental criteria to achieve minimization of energy consumption at no cost, especially at the built environment (Ardavani et al, 2020 ; Doulos et al, 2019 , 2020 ; Mavridou & Doulos, 2019 ; Papalambrou et al, 2019 ).…”

“…In the worst cases, the response to a particular situation may be incorrect. Useless light, known as light pollution, is a particular form of environmental pollution caused by glare, light trespass in non-target areas, and skyglow [15]. Light pollution is not only a nuisance, but an ecological hazard.…”

“…By applying a conscious approach to the analyzed problem, it is possible to significantly reduce the adverse effects of light pollution. It means that, because of these treatments, it is possible to create dark sky protection areas in selected places around the whole world [30][31][32][33]. Indeed, artificial light has a great impact on the environment at night in many different ways, which are only briefly mentioned in this paper.…”
