Analysis of the Consciousness of University Undergraduates for Sustainable Consumption

This research seeks to measure the degree of consciousness for sustainable consumption in a wide sample of university students. The interest of this study is to analyze if students' choice of degree, as well as their progress in university education, influences the development of the dimensions that construct the consciousness for sustainable consumption. The study is completed by means of a questionnaire survey aimed at first and final year students of seven university degrees across four different faculties. A factorial analysis of principal components is performed to analyze the dimensions of sustainability and robust contrasts of mean differences are conducted to observe the differences by degrees and years. The results indicate that the measurement scale of the variable consciousness for sustainable consumption maintains its original structure when applied to a sample of Spanish university students. Although there are significant differences by degree in the development of awareness about sustainable consumption, the authors cannot conclude that the training received at the degree level helps to improve the level of awareness of students in their decisions for responsible behavior in consumption.

Abstract:This study aims to comprehend Portland State University (PSU)'s green campus strategies, and students' level of knowledge and living practices relating to green campus. PSU's sustainable campus plan has been nationally and internationally recognized. A literature review, field investigation, and interviews were conducted to ascertain the PSU green campus strategies. This study also used a survey to understand students' level of knowledge and practices. The survey results were analyzed by SPSS. Green campus projects at PSU were operated by official organizations and funded according to PSU's long term plans in 12 multilateral categories: administration, energy, water, climate action, green buildings, green purchasing, waste reduction and recycling, food and dining services, transportation, land use, action, and education and student activity. The survey results show that the level of students' understanding about PSU's green campus strategies was somewhat low, but the amount of practice of a sustainable lifestyle was higher. Students who had taken courses related with sustainability or were engaged in sustainable activities had more knowledge about green campus strategies than students who had not. Therefore, it would be important to focus more on educating students and developing related programs in order to have more positive effects of green campus projects.

A indicação de que parte do atual cenário ambiental é resultante das atividades humanas tem gerado um aumento da pressão política e social sobre as organizações, para que essas adotem práticas ambientais eficazes. Essa pressão atualmente atinge aos mais diversos setores, inclusive o educacional. Dessa forma, a incorporação das questões ambientais ao planejamento estratégico, denominada estratégia ambiental, demonstra ser uma oportunidade de gerenciar, de forma eficaz, as diversas pressões e desafios da atualidade. As Instituições de Ensino Superior, em especial, possuem uma grande responsabilidade de executar aquilo que ensinam. Assim, o presente artigo tem por objetivo avaliar a gestão ambiental e a incorporação dos temas ambientais ao planejamento estratégico de uma Instituição de Ensino Superior internacional, por meio da percepção de seus colaboradores. Os resultados demonstram que a estratégia ambiental adotada pela Instituição possui natureza reativa, contrariando em partes sua responsabilidade de instituição promotora do conhecimento. Verifica-se, igualmente, que a Instituição possui um sistema de gestão ambiental informal, composto por diversas ações que possuem exigência legal. Identifica-se, por fim, inúmeras possibilidades de melhoria dos processos de gestão ambiental da organização. This pressure now affects the most diverse sectors, including education. In this way, the incorporation of environmental issues into strategic planning, called environmental strategy, proves to be an opportunity to effectively manage various pressures and challenges. Higher Education Institutions, in particular, have a great responsibility to carry out what they teach. Thus, the objective of this article is to evaluate environmental management and the incorporation of environmental themes into the strategic planning of an International Higher Education Institution, through the perception of its employees. The results show that the environmental strategy adopted by the Institution is reactive, by nature, contradicting in part its responsibility as an institution that promotes knowledge. It is also verified that the Institution has an informal environmental management system, composed of several actions that have legal requirements. Finally, it identifies innumerable possibilities for improving the organization's environmental management processes.
