Purpose This paper aims to compare the environmental sustainability practices at the campus operations between two Portuguese higher education institutions (HEIs) at different stages of the implementation of an Eco-School Programme. It also seeks to analyse the involvement of the students in the process of implementing these practices in their institutions. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire survey was carried out in two HEIs (a green and a non-green institution). Data were collected from a total of 832 students. Techniques of descriptive statistics and inferential statistical techniques such as the Mann-Whitney test, χ2 and Spearman correlation test, were applied. Findings The results obtained show that, from the students’ perspective, and in both institutions, there is still much to be done on the path towards sustainability, particularly in transport and landscaping. Significant differences were found only between some environmental sustainability practices at the campus level. However, students from the green institution are more participative in sustainability activities. Practical implications This study provides a picture of two HEIs’ sustainability behaviour from the students’ standpoint, which can be important for decision-makers in HEIs, in as much that students are one of the HEIs’ major stakeholder groups; furthermore, it enables them to better guide their efforts towards sustainability. Originality/value This paper focusses on the students’ perspective and their role in the sustainability initiatives undertaken by HEIs. It can be useful for future research that attempts to analyse the importance of HEIs’ stakeholder participation in sustainability.

The application of green concepts on campus starts from the formulation of the vision and mission, ratification of policies and development processes. The main problems in the effort to realize a green campus include a lack of involvement and individual awareness of sustainability issues and campus users are unaware of the sustainability that occurs on campus. Individual awareness and involvement of staff and students are needed to create a green campus. The purpose of this study was to analyze what educational activities should be carried out to increase awareness of realizing a green campus. There are several educational activities regarding green concepts aimed to campus users. Education activities such as courses on sustainable environment, research, seminars, student organizations in environmental activities, green campus promotions/campaign and paperless became independent variables in this study. This study uses quantitative methods with Factor analysis. The research was conducted at the Universitas Sumatera Utara. Data was collected by distributing questionnaire forms with respondents as many as 400 students. The results showed that education, practical and seminar activities about the importance of green concepts, green campus campaigns, and green applications on campus such as paperless needed to be done in raising awareness to realize a green campus.

Service-Learning Projects in University Degrees Based on Sustainable Development Goals: Proposals and Results

We present several Service-Learning projects developed considering Sustainable Development Goals to provide the students skills for the support of a sustainable society. This project begins with collecting initial impressions from surveys and reflections to know both the students’ expectations and their degree of involvement in the development of a sustainable society. Next, the students design academic projects taking into account the needs of the specific collective to which the Service-Learning activity is oriented. When this design has finished, such projects are developed with the users and the activity is evaluated. During 2019–2020, these projects were done with four entities oriented to people either with Asperger’s syndrome, Down syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease or mental health illnesses. A total of 35 and 10 students, respectively, from the Bachelor’s Degree of Engineering in Industrial Design and Product Development and from the Master’s Degree in Professorship of High School have participated in this experience. We analyze the results from the perspective of the different agents involved, considering both qualitative and quantitative metrics. The results show that both users and staff are satisfied with this collaboration between the university and their entities. Moreover, this experience clearly has contributed to a better personal and professional student’s development.
