Identification, prevalence and genetic diversity study of potato viruses in Northeastern states of India

Abstract: Potato affecting viruses is an important biotic factor that hampers both the quality and yield of potato production worldwide. The occurrence of potato viruses has been historically recorded in India. Viruses such as potato virus X (PVX), potato virus Y (PVY), potato virus A (PVA), potato virus M (PVM), potato virus S (PVS), potato leafroll virus (PLRV) have been recorded in all potato growing zones. To investigate the presence and distribution of potato virus diseases in North‐East India, a survey of seven ma… Show more

“…According to a study conducted in Bangladesh’s key potato-growing regions, the prevalence of PLRV, PVX, PVY, PVS, potato virus H (PVH), potato aucuba mosaic virus (PAMV), and PVM ranged from 2 to 8.33% [ 37 ]. PVY, PLRV, and PVM were the most common viruses in India, accounting for 44.26%, 42.62%, and 27.86%, respectively [ 38 ]. Recent surveys in Brazil have found PVX levels as high as 10% and PVS levels as 20% in imported potato seeds [ 39 ].…”

“…Potato virus X (PVX, genus potexvirus), potato virus Y (PVY, genus potyvirus), potato virus A (PVA), potato virus M (PVM), potato virus S (PVS), and potato leafroll virus (PLRV, genus polerovirus) have been recorded in all potato growing zones and are probably the most diverse and economically harmful viruses infecting the world’s potato production ( Halabi et al, 2021 ). The PVY have positive-sense (+), single-stranded RNA genome, with an average size of 9.7 kb in length.…”
