Employing CRISPR/Cas Technology for the Improvement of Potato and Other Tuber Crops

Abstract: New breeding technologies have not only revolutionized biological science, but have also been employed to generate transgene-free products. Genome editing is a powerful technology that has been used to modify genomes of several important crops. This review describes the basic mechanisms, advantages and disadvantages of genome editing systems, such as ZFNs, TALENs, and CRISPR/Cas. Secondly, we summarize in detail all studies of the CRISPR/Cas system applied to potato and other tuber crops, such as sweet potato,… Show more

“…Based on this, scientists can further target genes directly associated with pathogen resistance, such as genes encoding disease resistant proteins or regulatory factors involved in plant immune responses. By precisely knocking out, modifying, or introducing new gene fragments, new varieties that can resist specific diseases can be created, such as those that can effectively combat cassava mosaic virus or African cassava mosaic virus (Tussipkan and Manabayeva, 2021).…”

“…This tool exploit is designed to guide RNAs that identify a protospacer adjacent motif (PAM) sequence occurring downstream of the target-DNA [ 41 ]. The CRISPR/Cas 9 system was successfully implemented to engineer genomes of various plants, including crops showing resistance to environmental stresses, nutrient content enrichment, and yield improvement [ 42 ]. Most recently, the CRISPR/Cas9 strategy was used to edit DCL2 and DCL4 genes dicer-like in N. benthamiana plants.…”

“…Genome editing systems, such as CRISPR/Cas, have been used for trait improvement of tubers, fibers, and cereal crops (Gao et al, 2017;Liu et al, 2021;Tussipkan and Manabayeva 2021). To our knowledge, there are few studies on using the CRISPR/Cas9 system for the enhancement of phytoremediation efficiency.…”
