Identification of Water Contamination Sources Using Hydrochemical and Isotopic Studies—The Kozłowa Góra Reservoir Catchment Area (Southern Poland)

Abstract: The application of combined research methods, such as hydrochemical and isotopic analyses, facilitates understanding of the origin of water constituents and migration of contaminants in the aquatic environment. The presented study attempts to identify contamination sources affecting water quality within the Kozłowa Góra reservoir catchment area (southern Poland). A total of 100 water samples were collected from surface water (the Brynica river, streams, and the reservoir) and groundwater (a Quarternary aquifer… Show more

“…The water environment is faced with excessive use of its resources, including the discharge of various types of substances and sewage, emergency situations of pollutant discharge and illegal waste storage, which undoubtedly determines its condition. [1][2][3] Disturbance of natural hydrological movement as a result of human engineering activities is also important. The streams are fenced, their bed and flow direction are changed, and drainage works are carried out.…”

“…The source of contamination of surface and groundwater is illegally discharged domestic sewage from areas without sewage systems, some of which is released into the environment without prior treatment.
