Identification of Volatile Oil Components ofNepeta binaludensisJamzad by GC-MS and13C-NMR Methods and Evaluation of its Antimicrobial Activity

Abstract: Abstract:The essential oil of the aerial parts of Nepeta binaludensis Jamzad , an endemic species to Iran, was obtained by hydro-distillation and analyzed by GC, GC-MS and then 13 C-NMR spectra of the main compounds. Sixty-five components, representing 97.42 % of the oil were identified. The major components of the oil were 1,8-cineol (68.31 %), α-terpineol (5.24 %), β-pinene (4.74 %), δ-terpineol (2.57 %), α-pinene (1.54 %). The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum cidal concentrations (MCCs) … Show more

“…In Adiguzel et al (2009) research, was studied the essential oil of Nepeta cataria and it was identified 22 compounds, dominantly 4aα,7α,7aβ-nepetalactone (70.4%), 4aα,7α,7aα-nepetalactone (6.0%) and 4aβ,7α,7aβ-nepetalactone (2.5%). In similar study was detected that essential oil of N. binaludensis contained 4aα, 7α, 7aα-nepetalactone (19%) as one of the main compounds (Mohammadpour et al 2013).…”

“…We have shown 1,8-cineol (43.5%), and 4aα,7α,7aβ-nepetalactone (23.5%) were the major components in essential oils of N. binaludensis. Mohammadpour et al (2013) reported that 1,8-cineol (68.3%) and α-terpineol (5.2%) were the major components, whereas Rustaiyan & Nadji (1999) suggested the main parts of the oil were 1,8-cineole (42.3%) and 4aα,7α,7aα-nepetalactone (25.2%).…”

“…Based on the au-thor´s field observations, the habitat of populations in the study of Mohammadpour et al (2013) is more saline than other populations, which could lead to a higher percentage of 1,8-cineol. However, our findings of N. binaludensis oil composition were more similar to Rustaiyan & Nadji (1999) rather than Mohammadpour et al (2013). Three main compounds that constitute more than 71% of the oil were the same with a nearly equal amount.…”

“…The increasing ineffectiveness in the antibiotic activities used for controlling plant and animal pathogen [2][3][4] has become a big challenge among researchers, clinicians and policymakers. Antimicrobial synthetic products used in food industries are even not safer as for the human health is concerned, leading to chemical toxicity [5].…”
