Identification of the Wheat Curl Mite as the Vector of the High Plains Virus of Corn and Wheat

Abstract: Wheat with virus-like symptoms (extracts containing a 33-kDa protein in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, negative in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to wheat streak mosaic virus, and not infectious in a backassay to other wheat) reacted positively to antiserum made against a protein purified from symptomatic corn infected with the High Plains virus (HPV), indicating a serological relationship between the corn and wheat pathogens. The wheat curl mite (WCM, Aceria tosichella Keifer) w… Show more

“…The WCM also transmits wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV; 19). Some plants of both wheat and corn have been found to be doubly infected (4,8,17,18). Our observations indicate that the epidemiology of HPV may be similar to WSMV because of their mutual association with the WCM vector.…”

“…It was first identified in Nebraska in corn in 1994 (9,11). Currently, wheat, corn, and barley have been identified as crops that can be systemically infected by HPV (18). HPV has an associated 32 kDa protein which is probably a nucleoprotein rather than capsid protein (10,12).…”

“…They include Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV; 17), High Plains virus (HPV; 6), Barley yellow dwarf virus (14), Wheat spindle streak mosaic virus (24); Wheat soilborne mosaic virus (9), and Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV;20). TriMV was discovered in 2006 in Kansas and subsequently shown to be transmitted by the wheat curl mite (WCM; Aceria tosichella Keifer) (19), which also transmits WSMV and HPV (16,21,23).…”

“…WSMV and HPV, the two viruses known to be transmitted by WCMs before TriMV's discovery, are widespread in the Great Plains (8,16). Recent studies have shown that co-infection of wheat with WSMV and TriMV results in synergism that increases symptom severity, elevates titers of both viruses (26), and exacerbates biomass and yield loss (2,28).…”

“…This mite also vectors two other viruses in wheat in the Great Plains: Wheat mosaic virus (WMoV), also known as High Plains virus, a tentative member of the genus Emaravirus (Seifers et al 1997;Tatineni et al 2014); and Triticum mosaic virus (TriMV; Poacevirus, Potyviridae) (Seifers et al 2009;Tatineni et al 2009). These three wheat viruses are widely spread across the Great Plains; however, WSMV has been shown to be the predominant virus in this complex (Burrows et al 2008;Byamukama et al 2013).…”
