Identification of suicide attempters by means of MMPI profiles

Abstract: Used multivariate procedures to determine whether psychiatric patients who had made a suicide attempt immediately prior to hospitalization (N = 161) could be differentiated from nonsuicidal psychiatric patients (N = 161). Multivariate analysis of variance and cluster analysis failed to identify differences in the MMPI data of suicidal and nonsuicidal patients. In contrast, discriminant analysis produced a modest degree of differentiation that generally was maintained in the cross‐validation.

“…Although better results have been obtained in this regard, they nevertheless remain inconsistent (Clopton, 1978;Clopton & Baucom, 1979;Clopton & Jones, 1975;Clopton, Pallis, & Birtchnell, 1979;Clopton, Post, & Larde, 1983;Eyman & Eyman, 1991;Greene, 1988;Leonard, 1977;Stancak, Fraenkel, & Jassova, 1983;Waters et al, 1982). This could be due to the variety of samples used and to their respective heterogeneity, especially as regards gender (see Leonard, 1977), to the varying interval between MMPI administration and the suicidal acts (Clopton et al, 1983), and to the definition of the suicidal acts themselves (Watson et al, 1984). In this last respect, certain studies have included suicide threats or suicide ideation in their comparisons; unlike suicide attempts and completions, these are not actual behaviors in the sense of acting out.…”

“…These profiles have generally included high scores on the D, Pd, and Sc scales. Clopton et al (1983) identified profiles with high Sc, Pd, and Pt scores for women and high Sc, D, and Pt scores for men. Stancak et al (1983) observed high D, Pd, Mf, Pa, Sc, and Pt scores for female suicide attempters and high D, Pd, and Pa scores for male suicide attempters.…”

“…However, most of the studies during this time period concluded that the MMPI was unable to differentiate between individuals who attempted or died by suicide and individuals with suicidal ideation alone or between individuals with or without suicidal ideation (Clopton & Baucom, 1979; Clopton & Jones, 1975; Clopton, Post, & Larde, 1983; Daigle, 2004; Kinsinger, 1973; Pallis & Birtchnell, 1977; Ravensborg & Floss, 1969; Sendbuehler, Kincel, Nemeth, & Oertel, 1979). …”

“…Investigators have previously examined the usefulness of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) in assessing suicide potential among adult psychiatric patients, Although some studies have found that adult suic~de attempters obtain more deviant MMPI profiles than comparison psychiatric groups (e.g., Devries, 1966;Watson, Klett, Walters, & Laughlin, 1983), other studies have not detected differences between suicidal and nonsuicidal psychiatric patients (e.g., Clopton & Baucom, 1979;Clopton, Post, & Larde, 1983). To our knowledge, only a single study (Marks & Haller, 1977) has examined the usefulness of the MMPI with adolescent suicide attempters.…”
