Identification of stably expressed quantitative trait loci for cooked rice elongation in non-Basmati varieties

Abstract: The elongation of the cooked grain determines the cooking and eating quality of Basmati rice. The identification of stable quantitative trait loci (QTLs), especially those from non-Basmati types, will extend the genetic basis of the Basmati type and facilitate the breeding of high-quality varieties. A set of recombinant inbred lines derived from an indica x japonica hybrid was used to identify QTLs controlling the elongation ratio (ER), elongation index (EI), and water absorption (WA) of the cooked grain. Thre… Show more

“…Overall, identified QTLs in this population covered 38.45 and 95.36% of phenotypic variation for grain yield, respectively in the first year and second years. Previous studies reported presence of gene locus controlling yield on chromosome 3 (GUO et al, 2007), chromosome 7 (LIU et al, 2008ZHOU et al, 2009), and chromosome 8 (LIU et al, 2008, FU et al, 2010. As shown, few QTLs have been mapped for this trait.…”

“…In rice, presence of QTLs simultaneously influencing different traits has been reported. FAN et al (2006), WAN et al (2008), TRAORE et al (2011) and EBADI et al (2013) identified clusters of genes in which a single mechanism controls multiple traits. Gene clusters in population were identified for different traits on chromosomes 1 and 12 (Tables g and h).…”

“…Linear elongation ratio is an important cooking quality trait and we identified an associations for LER on chromosomes 9. A QTL for LER was reported on chromosome 4 with the marker interval of C933 to C946 using RIL population of indica x indica hybrids 80 .…”

“…Several studies reported QTLs for GE performed across different genetic backgrounds, including the three QTLs on chromosome 2, 6 and 11 2 ; a QTL on chromosome 3 8 ; a QTL on chromosome 8 9 and four QTLs on chromosome 3, 6, 7, and 8 10 . In addition, three QTLs on chromosome 2, 4, and 12 were also identified in non-Basmati varieties 11 . Despite these mapping efforts, only limited information is available on the possible genes and genetic control of GE.…”
