Identification of Rheumatoid Factor in Periodontal Disease

Abstract: Rheumatoid factor (RF) was detected by latex‐slide agglutination in subgingival plaque, inflamed gingival tissue, stimulated pooled saliva and serum of patients suffering from chronic moderate periodontitis. The etiology of rheumatoid factor and its possible homeostatic role in periodontal disease are discussed, in relation to the reported association of Gram‐negative bacterial endotoxin and the chronic antigenic stimulating nature of periodontal disease.

“…This contrasts with reports showing that RF can be detected in the gingiva, subgingival plaque, and serum of patients with PD (42, 43). Locally-produced RF in PD appears to be most closely linked to infections with Fusobacterium nucleatum and Capnocytophaga ochracea , oral pathogens that do not express PAD (42, 44).…”

“…This similarity between RA and periodontal disease has prompted many studies [3,8,10,11,17]. MALMSTROM AND CALONIUS [11] have shown an increased frequency of edentulous patients and more missing teeth in patients with RA, when compared Table 4 Immunoglobulin levels in 15 systemically and periodontally healthy control subjects (mg/dl) with control subjects.…”

“…RF has been detected in the gingiva, subgingival plaque, saliva, and serum of patients with various periodontal diseases, particularly in patients with AP (41)(42)(43)(44)(45). However, the characteristics and precise function of RF in periodontal disease has not yet been established.…”
