We studied the morphological characteristics, nutritional quality, and the bioactive compounds in fruits of two avocado accessions, RN-7 and RN-8, produced in Hainan province, China. Edible and non-edible parts of the fruit (pulp and seed) were compared to evaluate their possible contribution to improve the sustainability of the food and pharmaceutical industries. The basic characteristics evaluated were moisture, ash, total lipid, fatty acid composition, soluble sugars, titratable acid, soluble protein, and minerals. We also measured the concentrations of six types of bioactive compounds; total phenolics, flavonoids, tannin, ascorbic acid, tocopheryl acetate, and carotenoids. Our analyses of the nutritional compositions demonstrated that the pulp of the RN-7 and RN-8 proved to be rich in moisture, total lipid, and soluble protein. The seed, in turn, had higher soluble sugar, titratable acidity, sodium, potassium, calcium, iron, copper, and zinc contents. Other nutritional compositions (ash, magnesium, and manganese) had little differences between the pulp and seed of avocado fruit. With regard to the contents of bioactive compounds, the seed was superior to the pulp in the contents of total phenolics, flavonoids, and tannin. Regarding the concentrations of ascorbic acid, tocopheryl acetate, and total carotenoids, the highest values were found in the pulp. The results of fatty acid compositions displayed that the palmitic, palmitoleic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic acid contents of the pulp were higher than those of the seed, while myristic and arachic acid had higher contents in the seed.

In Mexico 77 000 t of avocado 'Hass' are harvested per year. Its omega fatty acid content makes it attractive due to its beneficial health effects, so it is important to know the quality of your oil. The harvested fruit in a green state in three localiti es, Nayarit, Michoacán and Jalisco. The three batches of fruit were divided into two groups; the former was lyophilized immediately, while the latter was allowed to mature to the point of consumption. The dry matter, the oil content and the fatty acid profile were determined. The green fruit presented the lowest range in the oil content (12.3 -15.5%) compared to the mature fruit (12.7 -17.8%). The mature Jalisco avocado showed higher oil content (17.8%) compared to Nayarit (12.7%) and Michoacán (17.3%). The content of saturated fatty acids was reduced to 28% by maturation, while oleic acid and linoleic acid increased by 20%. The planting location significantly affects the content of oleic acid; at lower altitudes the content of this acid is reduced up to 14%. The data suggest a possible origin designation for Mexican avocado. ResumenEn México se cosechan al año 77 000 t de aguacate 'Hass'. Su contenido en ácidos grasos omega lo hace atractivo debido a sus efectos benéficos a la salud, por lo que es importante conocer la calidad de su aceite. Se cosecho fruto en estado verde en tres localidades, Nayarit, Michoacán y Jalisco. Los tres lotes de fruto se dividieron en dos grupos; el primero fue liofilizado inmediatamente, mientras que el segundo se dejó madurar hasta punto de consumo. Se determinó la materia seca, el contenido de aceite y el perfil de ácidos grasos. El fruto verde presentó el menor rango en el contenido de aceite (12.3 -15.5%) en comparación con el fruto maduro (12.7 -17.8%). El aguacate maduro de Jalisco presentó mayor contenido de aceite (17.8%) en comparación con el de Nayarit (12.7%) y Michoacán (17.3%). El contenido de ácidos grasos saturados se redujo hasta 28% por efecto de la maduración, mientas que el ácido oleico y el linoleico se incrementaron 20%. La localidad de siembra afecta significativamente el contenido de ácido oleico; a menor altitud el contenido de este ácido se disminuye hasta 14%. Background The oil content, composition and marketing threshold value of an avocado depends on the cultivar hence, identifying the cultivar of the avocado fruit is desirable. However, analytical methods have not been reported with this aim. Results A multivariate classification tree method was proposed to discriminate three commercial botanical varieties of avocado: Hass, Fuerte and Bacon, using high‐performance liquid chromatography coupled to a charged aerosol detector (HPLC‐CAD). Prior to the chromatographic analysis the avocados were lyophilized and then the oil fraction was extracted using a pressurized liquid extraction system. Normal and reverse phase liquid chromatography were applied in order to obtain the chromatographic fingerprint for each sample. Soft independent modelling of class analogies (SIMCA) and partial least‐squares discriminant analysis (PLS‐DA) were applied. Classification quality metrics were determined to evaluate the performance of the classification. Several strategies to develop the classification models were employed. Finally, the useful application of ‘classification trees’ methodology, which has been scarcely applied in the field of analytical food control, was evaluated to perform a multiclass classification. Conclusion Discrimination of the three botanical varieties was achieved. The best classification was obtained when the PLS‐DA is applied on the normal‐phase chromatographic fingerprints. Classification trees are showed to be useful tools that provide complementary information to single concatenated models showing different results from the same prediction sample set. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry
