Identification of phenolic compounds from the leaf part of<i>Teucrium pseudo</i>-<i>Scorodonia</i>Desf. collected from Algeria

Rhaponticum acaule (L.) DC. is a medicinal plant commonly used for the treatment of some illnesses such as gastrointestinal infections. In this work, we report the composition of different parts of this plant on phenolic compounds, their quantification, and antioxidant activity. The obtained results reported that methanolic extracts of the three parts studied revealed high phenolic contents. For flavonoid contents, the highest contents were reported in organic extracts of leaf part. In addition, results obtained from the study of the antioxidant activity showed that methanolic extract of roots presented the highest activity, in DPPH • scavenging ability test with an IC 50 of 0.31±0.04 mg/mL and in FRAP test with an EC 50 of 1.06 ± 0.02 mg/mL. The RP-HPLC-PDA analysis revealed the presence of five phenolic acids (sinapic, caffeic, chlorogenic, ferulic and syringic acids), one flavanone (naringenin), one flavonol (rutin) and vanillin.

The aim of this study is to demonstrate the antifungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-migratory potential of the essential oil of Teucrium scordium subsp. scordioides (Schreb.) Arcang, a plant widely used in traditional medicine in Sardinia. The oil was rich in germacrene D (25.1 %), -cadinene (12.9 %), alloaromadendrene (11.3 %). The yeast Cryptococcus neoformans and the dermatophytes Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale and Epidermophyton floccosum were the most susceptible fungi to the action of the oil. In lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages, the oil was able to decrease nitric oxide production by ca. 30% at 1.25 μL/mL, without affecting cell viability. In the scratch wound assay, it allowed for ca. 36% of wound closure after 18h, thus showing anti-migratory properties. Overall, this study highlights the potential of species to mitigate fungal infections associated with an inflammatory response. Furthermore, we also reported for the first time its antimigratory capacity, thus suggesting anticancer properties.
