Identification of Novel Fluorinated Surfactants in Aqueous Film Forming Foams and Commercial Surfactant Concentrates

Abstract: Recent studies comparing the results of total organofluorine-combustion ion chromatography (TOF-CIC) to targeted analysis of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) have shown that a significant yet variable portion of the total organofluorine in environmental and biological samples is in the form of unknown PFASs. A portion of this unknown organofluorine likely originates in proprietary fluorinated surfactants not included in LC-MS/MS … Show more

“…One serious glitch in the regulation of production and use of long-F-chain PFASs is that companies that did not adhere to the USEPA Stewardship Program immediately started or increased production of these PFASs in order to meet increasing market demands and Multiplication of components in a technical product [16][17][18] also complicates the regulators' task.…”

“…10−12 This has led to a phasing out of PFAAs with more than six perfluorinated carbons 13−15 and to a proliferation of possible replacement substances. 16,17 However, little is known about the inherent hazards or the environmental behavior of these replacement structures. Lack of chemical standards continues to impede monitoring and experimental investigation.…”

“…Perfluoroalkyl substances are key components in this formulation because they lower the surface tension at the air-foam interface and form a film over the hydrocarbon fuel to prevent re-ignition [6][7][8]. The concentration and composition of PFASs in AFFF vary by year of production, fabrication process and by manufacturer [6,9]. AFFF have been widely used at sites such as airports, oil refineries and military bases for emergency and training purposes [6].…”
