Identification of novel diagnostic and prognostic miRNA signatures in endometrial cancer

Abstract: With the goal of identifying diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in endometrial cancer, miRNA-profiling was carried out with formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue samples from 49 endometrial cancer patients. Results using an 84-cancer specific miRNA panel identified the upregulation of miR-141-3p and miR-96-5p along with a downregulation of miR-26, miR-126-3p, miR-23b, miR-195-5p, miR-374a and let-7 family of miRNAs in endometrial cancer. We validated the dysregulated expression of the identified miR… Show more

“…These results were validated in serum samples and showed higher specificity and sensibility then PSA (Prostate-specific antigen) testing ( 112 ). Similar results were also obtained for different types of cancer, where circulating miRNAs are potential markers of disease progression and response to treatment, as well as a promising screening test for cancer detection ( 12 , 116 118 ). However, there is a lack of studies suggesting the potential of miRNAs as markers of infectious/parasitic diseases in humans.…”

“…There was less consensus on miRNAs that are downregulated in women with endometrial cancer (Table 2), with 44 different miRNAs being down-regulated. However, all miRNAs were only reported in 1 article [15,21,30,32,[34][35][36][37][38][39]. MiR-137 and miR-129-3p showed the largest mean fold change (115.15 and 42.30 respectively) but were only found in a small cohort (sample size EC 23 and sample size control 4 patients) [33].…”

“…Furthermore, increased levels of miR-944 were observed in EC cell lines. miR-944 expression was associated with the EC stages and pathology results of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) [ 64 ].…”
