Identification of novel denitrifying bacteria Stenotrophomonas sp. ZZ15 and Oceanimonas sp. YC13 and application for removal of nitrate from industrial wastewater

Abstract: Two novel denitrifying bacteria were successfully isolated from industrial wastewater and soil samples. Using morphological, biochemical/biophysical and 16S rRNA gene analyses, these two bacteria were identified as Stenotrophomonas sp. ZZ15 and Oceanimonas sp. YC13, respectively. Both of these two bacteria showed efficient NO(3) (-)-N removing abilities under a semi-anaerobic condition without obvious accumulation of NO(2) (-)-N, N(2)O-N and NH(4) (+)-N. NO(3) (-)-N removal from paper mill wastewater was also … Show more

“…These strains, GIIA2, GIIA3, GIIA4, GIIA7, GIIA9, GIIA15, GIIA16, GIIA20, GIIA23, and GIIA27 showed the highest hydrolytic capacities with Another genus found was Stenotrophomonas sp. While soil and plants are its main environmental reservoir (RYAN et al, 2009), this bacterium has also been isolated from diverse effluent treatment plants and wastewater (YU; LIU; WANG, 2009;VERMA et al, 2010) and from a Brazilian sugar cane variety (RAMOS et al, 2011). In agreement with the results obtained, some researchers have described the production of extracellular enzymes by Stenotrophomonas including proteases, lipases, nucleases, and chitinases (TRAVASSOS et al, 2004;KUDDUS, RAMTEKE, 2011).…”

“…Some members of these families have been shown to be involved in hydrocarbon degradation [2932]. Betaproteobacteria -related clones belonging to the Burkholderiales order were observed in crude oil samples from Barracuda and Caratinga fields.…”

“…The regular growth mode of this bacterial strain S. malotophilia MK2 is aerobic heterotrophy; however, the strain MK2 can grow in anaerobic environments either through amino acid fermentation or nitrate reduction. The previous studies on strain ZZ15 belongs to S. maltophilia showed a microaerophilic growth under denitrifying environments (Yu et al, 2009). In contrast, the pure cultures of many Stenotrophomonas strains are unable to grow in oxygen lacking conditions (Assih et al, 2002; Dungan et al, 2003).…”
