Identification of IP-10 and IL-5 as Proteins Differentially Expressed in Human Complicated and Uncomplicated Carotid Atherosclerotic Plaques

Abstract: Inflammation plays a crucial role in the development and progression of atherosclerotic plaques. The aim of this study is to compare culture supernatants from uncomplicated and complicated carotid atherosclerotic plaques by a multiplex approach, to assess the molecular mediators associated with a plaque complicated phenotype. Atherosclerotic plaques were obtained from 17 patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy. Supernatants from plaque cultures were evaluated by Bio-Plex cytokine assay to determine 27 pro- … Show more

“…Interferon-gamma induced protein of 10 kDa (IP-10) is a monocyte-derived pro-inflammatory chemokine that promotes the recruitment of lymphocytes and monocytes to sites of inflammation. IP10 is expressed in human atherosclerotic plaques(45) and plasma levels are elevated in patients with diabetes(46) and the metabolic syndrome(47). Interleukin-18 (IL-18) and its binding protein (IL-18BP) were also associated with EEAA .…”

“…Furthermore, although many studies have investigated IP-10 expression as a specific response to the in vitro stimulation of white blood cells to specific TB antigens, few studies have reported its use in its steady, unstimulated concentrations. Altered serum and/or tissue expression of IP-10 has been associated with inflammatory diseases, including organ-specific or systemic autoimmune diseases [35], neurologic disorders [36], vascular diseases [37,38] and viral and bacterial infections [39]. One previous meta-analysis [40] reported a pooled sensitivity and specificity of 73% and 82% for the diagnosis of TB.…”

It is expressed in human atherosclerotic plaques ( 80 ) and plasma levels have been correlated with waist circumference and BMI in adolescents ( 73 ) .…”
