“…The cfiA-ccrA gene is usually silent and is expressed only if an insertion sequence has inserted upstream of this structural gene, and it has been reported to occur only in B. fragilis (265)(266)(267). Although the cfiA-ccrA gene occurs in Ͻ10% of B. fragilis isolates, it has been reported worldwide, including in Japan, Argentina, China, Slovenia, and the United States, where the incidence of carbapenem-resistant B. fragilis remained Յ2.5% during 2008 through 2012 (266)(267)(268)(269).…”

“…The cfi A gene may be expressed at diverse levels, depending on the presence of IS upstream cfi A. In B. fragilis , IS 942, IS 1186 , IS 1187 , IS 1188, IS 612 , IS 613 , IS 614, IS 615, IS 616 , IS 4351, have been related to cfiA, with varying promotion efficiency [ 48 , 49 ]. In our study, IS 1186 was detected in only one strain.…”

“…For Bacteroides fragilis the WCMS approach was successful in differentiating carbapenem-resistant from susceptible isolates (Nagy et al, 2011; Wybo et al, 2011). The resistance to carbapenems (and other β-lactams) in B. fragilis is conferred to a gene – cfiA – the distribution of which among B. fragilis isolates is largely consistent with phylotypes with isolates belonging to Division II generally harboring the (silent) cfiA gene (Litterio et al, 2017). The corresponding protein, CfiA, has a mass of some 25,200 Da which is generally beyond the spectrum acquisition mass range in WCMS.…”
