ABSTRACT:In recent times, attention has focused on immunostimulants and plant products which could have beneficial effects in disease control. At present, the application of immunostimulants has been considered a more effective approach to health management in aquaculture through the enhancement of immune capability and disease resistance in shrimp. Garlic possesses bactericidal property against bacteria and can inhibit the growth of protozoa as well as gregarine infection in cultured shrimp. However, its effect on viral disease infection has not been well studied and requires further investigation. Garlic can also stimulate shrimp haemocytes as determined by cellular immune responses (phagocytic activity, superoxide anion production and phenoloxidase activity) suggesting that the immune-stimulatory properties of garlic will be useful for improvement of shrimp health. Here, we determined the expression of the immune-related genes Penaeidin, Crustin, Lysozyme, Toll-like, and tumour necrosis factor in kuruma shrimp, upon stimulation with allicin extract. The expression of these factors was measured for the first time and was found to be elevated in intestine and lymphoid organ after in vivo stimulation for 3, 12, 24 and 48 h. We conclude that garlic can be used in shrimp culture as an alternative to antibiotics or chemotherapeutic agents; however, further research is needed under field conditions.

RESUMEN.Los prebióticos tienen el potencial de incrementar la eficiencia y sostenibilidad de la producción acuícola. Uno de los prebióticos más promisorios en acuicultura son los Manano oligosacáridos (MOS). Estos MOS son moléculas de carbohidratos complejos derivados de la pared de la célula de la levadura Saccharomyces cerevisiae, que impiden la adhesión de patógenos bacterianos porque actúan bloqueando la adherencia de las lectinas microbianas con los carbohidratos presentes en la superficie de las células intestinales. Esta prevención de la adhesión impide la colonización y proceso infectivo de los patógenos. La ventaja del uso de MOS es que puede prevenir infecciones a través de mecanismos diferentes a los utilizados por los antibióticos. Este artículo muestra los avances obtenidos en uso de MOS como prebióticos en la acuicultura, en particular en el cultivo de crustáceos, donde han generado respuestas positivas en todas las experiencias actuando sobre el incremento del crecimiento, la supervivencia, modulando la respuesta inmune y modificando la morfología del tracto digestivo. La identificación de las cepas que son promovidas o excluidas y la caracterización de la acción moduladora en la microbiota resultante quedan abiertas como uno de los campos a desarrollar en conjunto con la extensión de estos resultados a la práctica productiva. Probiotics have the potential to increase the efficiency and sustainability of aquaculture production. The mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) are complex carbohydrates derived from the cell wall of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which act by blocking adherence of bacterial lectins to carbohydrates on the surface of intestinal cells; this action prevents colonization and infection processes carried out by bacterial pathogens. In this work, we review the current evidence about the use of MOS as prebiotics in shellfish aquaculture, enlightening the positive responses in most of the experiences, such as improvement in growth and survival, modulating the immune response and modifying the morphology of the digestive tract. The identification of strains that are promoted or excluded, and the characterization of the resulting modulating action in gut´s microbiota, remains open as one of the fields to be developed in conjunction with the extension of these results to the productive practice.

The culture or wild capture of marine and freshwater shellfish, including crustaceans, is without doubt a key source of protein for a burgeoning world population. Historically the expansion of aquaculture has, however, been accompanied by the increased incidence of economically significant diseases, most notably of viral and bacterial origin. Since the late 1970s great progress has been made in our understanding of the generalized protostome innate immune system. Distinct pathways, pathogen receptor proteins and effector molecules have since been identified that are not ancestral or homologous to those of the deuterostomes, including vertebrates. Within the past decade progress has accelerated with the rapid characterisation of new classes of recognition proteins, immune effectors and regulatory pathways. This paper provides a broad overview of our current understanding of invertebrate immunology, taking the crustacean decapod immune system as its focus. Recent developments in the field are described briefly and their implications and potential considered. These advances offer fundamental new insights in our efforts to understand disease in cultured populations and also to develop knowledge of environmental effects on host/pathogen interactions within a fishery context. Of course, challenges do remain, including the lack of an immortal cell line and the limited publically-available genomic resources. These are considered in this review as priorities for future research effort. With the continued application of more insightful technologies, coupled with associated investment, it is expected that the speed at which some of these issues are resolved will accelerate.
