Identification of a sperm cell attribute responsible for subfertility of roosters homozygous for the rose comb allele

Abstract: Fertility, sperm metabolism, sperm filling of oviductal sperm storage tubules (SST), and sperm motility were compared in subfertile roosters homozygous for the rose comb allele (R/R) and fertile controls (r/r or R/r males). As expected, fertility of R/R males was less than that of controls (p < 0.0001). The metabolic rate of spermatozoa from R/R males was also lower than that of controls (p < 0.05). Likewise, filling of SST in vivo was lower (p < 0.0001) for spermatozoa from R/R males than for control spermato… Show more

“…Variation in the expression of the DLX gene repertoire has been linked to craniofacial dysmorphology in several species, most recently in cichlid fish (Renz et al, 2011). Subfertility has been reported in birds homozygous for rose comb phenotype (McLean and Froman, 1996). Givens et al (2005) found evidence to support the role of DLX1 in regulating the GnRH promoter during development in mice.…”

“…Likewise, no difference in fertility was observed following intramagnal insemination of testicular sperm from R/R males [4]. McLean and Froman [8] reported that sperm ejaculated by R/R males do not enter the SST after artificial insemination to the same extent as sperm from fertile controls. However, there is no genotypic difference in sperm penetration of SST when sperm are incubated with oviduct explants [8].…”
