Identification of a female-produced sex pheromone from the southern corn rootworm,Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber

Abstract: A sex pheromone has been isolated and identified from virgin females of the southern corn rootworm (SCR),Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber. The synthesized compound, 10-methyl-2-tridecanone was shown to be attractive to males of the SCR, and also to males ofD. u. undecimpunctata Mannerheim, the western spotted cucumber beetle (WSCB), and ofD. u. duodecimnotata in Mexico. Males of both the SCR and the WSCB strongly preferred theR over theS enantiomer. The resolved enantiomers were not tested againstD. u… Show more

“…There is no evidence for any precopulatory male courtship or female choice in the SCB, although females signal receptivity and thus control the timing of male advances by releasing a sex pheromone (Guss et al 1983). Males approach females from behind and quickly mount.…”

“…Some other structure-related insect sex pheromones are known, as follows: 3,11-dimethyl-2-heptacosanone 8) and 3,11-dimethyl-2-nonacosanone 9) of a cockroach (Blattella germanica, Dictyoptera), 10-methyl-2-tridecanone of a beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi, Coleoptera), 10) and 6,12-dimethyl-2-pentadecanone of related species (D. balteata).…”

“…And in the fucata group, 10-methyl-2-tridecanone was isolated and identified from D. undecimpunctata howardi virgin females. This compound also attracted males of D. undecimpunctata undecimpunctata Mannerhiem (Guss et al 1983). Synthetic procedures for 8-methyl-2-decanol propanoate (Sonnet et al 1985) and 10-methyl-2-tridecanone (Senda & Mori 1983) have provided more opportunities for use of these compounds in integrated pest management programs.…”
