Identification of a CAPS marker tightly linked to the Tomato yellow leaf curl disease resistance gene Ty-1 in tomato

Abstract: During the process of breeding programmes, several resistance genes have been introgressed into tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) cultivars from different wild tomato relatives. A number of these resistance genes have been mapped to chromosome 6. Among them, Ty-1 and Mi, which confer resistance to Tomato yellow leaf curl disease and to Meloidogyne spp., respectively, are in most cases incorporated in commercial hybrids. Several molecular markers tightly linked to Mi have been identified. This study was conducted i… Show more

“…Inoculations were performed under confined conditions in an insect-proof growth chamber (see growth conditions above) appropriate for exotic virus containment. In these inoculation studies, we included the commercial tomato hybrid cultivar Anastasia (Seminis Vegetable Seeds Iberica, Almería, Spain) with TYLCD resistance based on the Ty-1 resistance gene [34]. Plants inoculated with A. tumefaciens carrying the empty vector were used as the mock-inoculated control.…”

“…Molecular markers have emerged as a fascinating technology for evaluating genetic diversity (Parsons et al 1997;Vijayan et al 2004;Kremer et al 2005), molecular phylogenetics (Droogenbroeck et al 2004), genetic fidelity (Ray et al 2006;Joshi and Dhawan 2007) and disease resistance (Morgan et al 1998;Farinho et al 2004;Blaszezyk et al 2005;Perez de Castro et al 2007). In addition, molecular marker techniques can also offer reliable tools for the early determination of sex in plants before they enter the reproductive stage.…”

“…Search for resistance in Solanum lycopersicum germplasm failed, so wild relatives (Solanum section Lycopersicon) have been screened intensively (Lapidot and Friedmann 2002;Picó et al 1996). This resistance results in a dramatic reduction in virus accumulation Zamir et al 1994) and is widely used in commercial hybrids (de Castro et al 2007). Variable levels of resistance have been found in wild Solanum species used for introgression of resistance into cultivated tomato (Friedman et al 1998;Rom et al 1993;).…”
