“…β-Caryophyllene and germacrene D were the highest sesquiterpene percentages, as described already for needles of P. pinea and other Pinus spp. [9,10]. However, the chemotype described for the essential oil from P. pinea needles (limonene > germacrene D > α-pinene > β-pinene) [10] does not match with our results, except for the relative concentrations of monoterpenes: limonene > α-pinene > β-pinene.…”

“…Pickett (1975) pointed out that part of the complexity of the terpene pattern of higher plants may often be due to secondary chemical reactions during the isolation procedure. Steam distillation is suspected to generate t~-terpinene, •-terpinene and oxygenated terpenes like terpinene-4-ol, terpinolene, linalool and borneol Pauly et al 1973;Lorbeer et al 1984). The quantities of these terpenes did not markedly increase in this study, compared with solvent extraction, possibly due to the adjustment of the pH to neutrality.…”

“…Pauli et al 12 and Petrakis et al 7 found the main components of the essential oil of the leaves to be α-pinene, β-pinene, caryophyllene and germacrene D, although in different concentrations. Vallejo 26 reported high amounts of longifolene, followed by α-pinene, while Kolesnikova et al 13 found α-pinene to be the almost sole constituent of the oil.…”
