Identification and validation of a quantitative trait locus associated with wheat yellow mosaic virus pathotype I resistance in a Japanese wheat variety

Abstract: Yellow mosaic disease, caused by wheat yellow mosaic virus (WYMV), is one of the most serious diseases of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in Japan. The three pathotypes of WYMV are distributed in different geographical areas: pathotype I is found mainly in western and central Japan (Kanto), pathotype II in northern Japan (Tohoku and Hokkaido) and pathotype III on the southern island of Japan (Kyushu). A total of 246 doubledhaploid (DH) lines, derived from a cross between 'Yumechikara' (resistant) and 'Kita… Show more

“…For WSSMV resistance, our results showed no obvious congruency with the major gene for WSSMV in bread wheat (Khan et al 2000), the resistance locus against the closely related wheat yellow mosaic Bymovirus (WYMV) , Kojima et al 2015, both on chromosome 2DL, nor to the WSSMV resistance gene Wss1 (Zhang et al 2005) on the short arm of homoeologous group 4 in Haldania villosa. Instead, in each of the three rye populations, a large effect QTL was detected on chromosome 7R.…”

“…The resistance of 'Madsen' operated exclusively in the root (Liu et al 2016). QTLs from different germplasms have been detected at similar locations as Qym1 on chromosome 2DL: YmYF from a Chinese cultivar 'Yangfu 9311', YmIb from a European cultivar 'Ibis', and Q. ymym from a Japanese cultivar 'Yumechikara' (Kojima et al 2015, Liu et al 2005, Nishio et al 2010. These QTLs may be allelic and thus pyramiding them is not a viable option.…”

“…A major QTL was detected in bread wheat on chromosome 2DL for resistance to both WSSMV (Khan et al 2000) and WYMV (Kojima et al 2015). This source of resistance is not easily exploitable in durum wheat breeding due to its location on the D genome.…”
