Identification and Classification of the Unique Features of Mass Housing Projects

Abstract: Mass housing projects (MHPs) are said to differ significantly from the “one-off” traditional building projects often encountered in the construction industry and thus require unique management skills and approach in MHPs delivery. This unique nature of MHPs contributes to managerial inefficiencies that result in delivery failures when management approaches are not adapted to the project characteristics. However, understanding and knowledge of the unique attributes of MHPs are critical towards improving the org… Show more

“…Construction projects are unique and share distinct characteristics. The physical and operational features of the project have a significant impact and contribute hugely to project success or failure (Kwofie et al , 2014). This is a significant gap in the previous studies as many previous studies have investigated causes of delays without investigating the delay causes in a specific type of projects (Prasad and Vasugi, 2017).…”

“…By drawing on the theoretical and practical perspectives of communication in the construction industry, it can be asserted that, both the project context and behavioural communication skills remain the main attribution factors that greatly influence the effectiveness and appropriateness of communication performance outcome. In this study, the attributes of MHPs inherent in its physical, organizational and operational features are denoted as the external causal factors that significantly influence the communication outcome among the MHP teams Kwofie et al 2014a, 2014b; Enshassi, 1997). The internal factors are related to the communication competency (skills) of the communication task performers in the communication process.…”

“…Adinyira et al (2013) and Kwofie et al (2014a, 2014b) empirically established that MHPs exhibit unique features and attributes which have practical and theoretical implications for their management and delivery approach. Ahadzie et al (2014) hinted that MHPs exhibit multiple construction site features which present unique communication challenges compared to the traditional “one-off” traditional projects often encountered in the construction industry.…”

“…This assessment of agreement allows for the mean ratings to be interpreted with confidence and also offer credence to the results and findings (Fellows and Liu, 2008;Field, 2009). This approach is similar to that used by Kwofie et al (2014) and Lindhard and Larsen (2016). A significance level of p = 0.05 was used for the Kruskal-Wallis tests at a confidence interval of 95 per cent following after the recommendations by Field ( 2009).…”
