Identification and Characterization of Métiers in Multi-Species Artisanal Fisheries. A Case Study in Northwest Spain

Abstract: Artisanal fisheries are characterized by using a vast array of different fishing gears and target species. Such heterogeneity has traditionally complicated their management and the availability of accurate data on fishing effort and incomes. This study identifies and characterizes the métiers currently used by an artisanal fishing fleet based in a coastal Atlantic region in South-Europe (Asturias, Northwest Spain), by applying an integrated method of analysis which combines administrative data on fishing licen… Show more

“…Surís-Regueiro and Santiago (2014) described the relationship between coastal and marine fisheries dependency and employment by characterizing income and employment from fisheries in Galicia, Spain. Some studies have acknowledged the challenge on enhancing artisanal fisheries management due to their open access nature (KMFRI, 2008;González-Álvarez et al, 2016;Siddons et al, 2017). Other studies have narrowed the focus and characterized catch by different gears in different sites to determine fishing effort for fisheries management (Laurence et al, 2015;Munga et al, 2014).…”

“…On the other hand, professional small-scale fisheries (SSF), carried out by vessels of an overall length of less than 12 m and not using towed fishing gear [ 11 ], are excluded from this scenario even though they may comprise a large part of national fleets and a large number of people employed/dependent on these fisheries [ 12 ]. SSF mainly involves the use of traditional passive gears to target multiple resource species [ 13 , 14 , 15 ] and operates in coastal areas, where many other users considerably compete for space and resources [ 16 ] and where sensitive and priority habitats for fisheries are located.…”
