Identification and characterization ofStreptomyces flavogriseusNJ-4 as a novel producer of actinomycin D and holomycin

Abstract: This paper is the first public report that Streptomyces flavogriseus can produce both actinomycin D and holomycin. The actinomycete strain NJ-4 isolated from the soil of Nanjing Agricultural University was identified as S. flavogriseus. This S. flavogriseus strain was found for the first time to produce two antimicrobial compounds that were identified as actinomycin D and holomycin. GS medium, CS medium and GSS medium were used for the production experiments. All three media supported the production of actinom… Show more

“…In most cases, these interactions are positive, as they combine in planta endophytic behavior (Sardi et al, 1992) with the ability to produce an array of specialized metabolites with biological activities (reviewed in Barka et al, 2016). In fact, they have been studied for their antibacterial and antifungal effects (Wei et al, 2017), as well as their plant growth promoting capabilities (reviewed in Viaene et al, 2016), and therefore they can be exploited in agriculture.…”

“…AH 11.4E3, applying the same approach. Moreover, few actinobacteria strains have been reported to produce considerable amount of act-D, including S. avermitilis (1770 mgL -1 ) (Chen et al., 2012), S. flavogriseus (960 mgL -1 ) (Wei et al., 2017) and S. sindenensis mutant strain (850 mgL -1 ) (Praveen et al., 2008b).…”

“…It acts as a transcription inhibitor by intercalating into DNA between adjacent guanine–cytosine base pairs inhibiting primarily cellular transcription (Singh et al., 2010). Due to its application as therapeutic agent for the treatment of some types of cancers, a great interest in increasing the yield of act-D was addressed towards different fermentation conditions and various microorganisms (Kurosawa et al., 2006; Dalili and Chau, 1988; Praveen et al., 2008a, 2008b; Hamza et al., 2013; Wei et al., 2017).…”

“…Actinomycetes, particularly the genus Streptomyces , are known as a potent source of secondary metabolites that have a wide array of biological activities [ 41 , 42 ]. In the current study, the extracts of all isolates were evaluated for their content of biologically active metabolites such as flavonoids, phenolics, tocopherols and carotenoids ( Table 4 , Figure 2 ).…”
