The hydrological effects of forest cover loss are difficult to discern in the case of large‐scale basins with gradual changes and difficult to isolate when climate variability is also present. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of climate variability and human activity on the annual streamflow in a basin in the Amazon arc of deforestation. We statistically analyzed the components of the annual water balance and monthly streamflow and used the currently used Tomer‐Schilling, elasticity, and decomposition of Budyko‐type curve methods to separate climate‐induced changes and anthropogenic effects. Annual series of the monthly maximum and minimum streamflow, total streamflow, and total reference evapotranspiration presented statistically significant increasing trends. No significant trend was observed for precipitation. The greatest change in the average annual runoff coefficient was observed between the first (1973–1984) and second (1985–1994) analyzed periods. Even with the continuous reduction in the forested area, the third (1994–2004) and fourth analyzed periods (2003–2016) showed only relatively small changes, most likely due to the intensity of slash‐and‐burn activities and vegetation regrowth. The methods showed that deforestation was the primary cause of the streamflow changes, but with different intensities, and a small recuperation was observed in the last analyzed period. On average, the annual water yield would increase between 26% and 58% after the first time interval without the opposite effect of climate variability, which must be considered in basin management. Future research should focus on analyzing the water storage and the dependence of the precipitation‐runoff relationship from the climate.

The objective of this study was to investigate the hypothesis of stationary behavior in the streamflow regime of the upper Juruá river. For this purpose, annual maximum daily flow data recorded at stations located in Cruzeiro do Sul and Marechal Thaumaturgo, AC, Brazil, were analyzed using Mann-Kendall, Pettitt, and Spearman's Rho tests. The results show sufficient evidence to conclude that in Cruzeiro do Sul flow rates have an ascending temporal behavior, while in Marechal Thaumaturgo it is descending. However, this tendency is not significant (p<0.05), allowing to conclude in favor of the hypothesis of stationarity in the streamflow series of the referred basin. Thus, one of the physical implications associated to the results obtained may be the conclusion that the streamflow regime in the Upper Juruá basin has not changed significantly over time. R E S U M O O presente estudo tem o objetivo de investigar a hipótese de comportamento estacionário no regime de vazões do alto rio Juruá. Para tal, foram utilizadas as séries temporais de vazões diárias máximas anuais, gravados nas estações localizadas em Cruzeiro do Sul e Marechal Thaumaturgo, as quais foram analisadas por meio do teste de Mann-Kendall, de Pettitt e do Spearman Rho teste. Os resultados demonstram evidências suficientes para concluir que, em Cruzeiro do Sul, as vazões apresentam comportamento temporal ascendente, enquanto em Marechal Thaumaturgo descendente. Entretanto, tal inclinação não é significativa (p<0,05), permitindo concluir em favor da hipótese de estacionariedade nas séries de vazões da referida bacia hidrográfica. Assim, uma das implicações físicas associadas aos resultados obtidos pode ser a conclusão de que o regime de vazões na bacia do Alto Juruá não sofreu alterações significativas ao longo do tempo. In recent decades, scientific and academic researchers around the world have been concerned with the assessment of regional and global climate trends. Under the hypothesis of the presence of climate change in Brazil, the aim of this work was to verify annual climate trends of maximum and minimum air temperatures and precipitation in 243 localities over all the Brazilian political regions. The data were obtained from National Institute of Meteorology. In this work there were identified and analysed trends in annual time series distributed between in 1961 and 2017. The detections and analyses were performed by the application of the statistical tests of Mann-Kendall and the Pettitt to evaluate the presence of statistical trends. The statistical results and the trend distributions maps show that, from all the studied localities, for maximum temperature indicate increasing trends in 35% of the series, decreasing trends in 1 and no trends in 64%. The minimum temperature showed increasing trends in 30% of the analysed series, decreasing in 8% and no trends in 63%. The precipitation, showed increasing trends in 6% of the studied series, decreasing in 4 and no trends in 91%. The observed climate trends can be related to anthropological activities like urban spraw, industrial development and increasing population density.
