ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile: Iridoviridae

Abstract: The Iridoviridae is a family of large, icosahedral viruses with double-stranded DNA genomes ranging in size from 103 to 220 kbp. Members of the subfamily Alphairidovirinae infect ectothermic vertebrates (bony fish, amphibians and reptiles), whereas members of the subfamily Betairidovirinae mainly infect insects and crustaceans. Infections can be either covert or patent, and in vertebrates they can lead to high levels of mortality among commercially and ecologically important fish and amphibians. This is a summ… Show more

“…The current nomenclature can lead to error in taxonomy [42]. Most viruses are identified as "iridovirus", which may suggest that they belong to the Iridoviridae family; however, only frog virus 3 (FV3) is officially recognized as a member of Iridoviridae [43]. The other sNCLDV, not yet officially recognized by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), have shown closer similarity with Mimiviridae [44].…”

“…The exception is Frog Virus 3 (FV3), the only member of the Iridoviridae family currently known to cause infection in sturgeon. FV3 is officially recognized by the ICTV as the type species of the genus Ranavirus (family Iridoviridae, subfamily Alphairidovirinae) [43]. Sturgeon are not the only fish infected by FV3.…”

“…The most common family present in almost all non-embryonic datasets was Iridoviridae, which belongs to the group of linear dsDNA viruses. Known hosts of Iridoviridae include amphibians, fish, reptiles, insects and crustaceans [51]. None of the identified sequences of Iridoviridae representatives was neither mapped in Artemia libraries, nor amplified from Artemia cDNA, which confirms that these dsDNA viruses are actively expressed and specific to Nematostella, or organisms comprising this holobiont, rather than food derived.…”

“…Megalocytivirus belongs to the family Iridoviridae and is one of the most virulent viruses in marine and freshwater fish (Chinchar et al., ). The first megalocytiviral infection was reported in red sea bream ( Pagrus major ) in Japan in 1990 (Inouye et al., ).…”
